A sure sentence is not the same as truth
Hallucination sounds like an illness. Here it is not a fever. It is a moment when the model stacks a name, a date, a book or a “study” that do not exist — and serves it as a fact. Without blushing. Without “maybe”. That certainty is exactly what is dangerous. When a friend lies, they often look away. A chatbot looks the same, whether it hit or not. That is why you learn this word in one sentence you can say to a teacher: AI invents a fact and sounds sure. Then you only train the reflex: a number, a name, a date, a citation — open another source. A hallucination is not proof that AI is useless. It is proof that you are the editor, not the audience.
Bára asks about a writer they have in the reader. The chatbot adds a book Bára has never seen, and a year of publication. It sounds learned. Adam googles it. The book does not exist. Bára shouts that the chatbot cheated her. Adam says: “It is not nerves. It is a hallucination.” They write the sentence in the notebook. Bára asks again: “Do not list books. Say only what you can say with certainty, and admit when you do not know.” The model shortens this time. Bára still checks it in the reader. The name sits. The invented title is gone. The lesson is not “never AI again”. The lesson is “a sure tone will not convince me”.
Look for a concrete hook: a date, a name, a number, a book title, a “study”. Those are the first suspects.
Why the model does it even when you do not want it
A model is trained to stack a continuation that sounds good. When it does not know, it often fills in a likely word rather than the sentence “I do not know”. Likely is not true. It can stack a name that sounds Czech. It can stack a year that fits the century. It can stack an article title. You notice it by looking elsewhere: a textbook, a wiki, a teacher, a library catalogue. Not by asking it “is that true?” and it saying yes. That is the same cook who cooked the meal. You will see hallucinations more on details that are not in every textbook. Big well-known facts it hits more often. That must not lull you. A detail in a report is exactly what a teacher will catch.
One hallucination, three steps. An example you can replay.
- Prompt: “Who wrote the story About the Faithful Little Dog in our reader, Year 5, publisher X?” When you invent the publisher, the model often invents the author too.
- The answer sounds: a name + a book + a year. It looks finished.
- Check: open the reader at the imprint. Does the name sit, or not? Library catalogue. Wiki. If the book is not there, it is a hallucination — even if it sounded polite.
Second mini example: “How many people live in our village?” The model likes to dump a number. The village board and the statistics office are the referees. A chatbot cannot see the village.
Do not ask the same chat “is that true?” as the only proof. You need a source outside the window.
Why this right now
You are in the course Ask with Martin, level Persiapan. You work in a chatbot (ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude) — same game, different brand. No code. A parent or the school creates the account. A child’s email does not belong here.
This is not the Inventor level. There you build a chatbot on your own website. Here you are a user: a question, a check, a citation.
You will know this lesson by one sentence: Hallucination: AI invents a fact and sounds sure. When you can say it to a parent or a teacher, you have got the core. The rest is practice, not magic.
Without this word you will flounder in Detective. With it you can stop a parent and a classmate who say “but it wrote it cleverly”. Clever is not true. Persiapan gives you the word. Later levels give you a method to catch it.
Four things you will build in this course
The course has four small projects. You do not have to do them all at once. Today you add only what this lesson can do.
🏫 A report with citations
An outline, three sources that exist, and a sentence in your own words. AI must not be the only author.
In a report a hallucination is worst in a citation and a date. That is why three sources.
📝 Test training
Coach role: let it ask, do not let it say the answer. You count / answer yourself.
A coach that invents a question that cannot be calculated is hallucinating too. Calculate it yourself.
📅 Family planner
Tasks for the week (not passwords, not marks). A parent sees the plan, not your chat.
A planner with a made-up date of a school event? Check in the school portal, not in the chat.
📜 An AI code for the class
Seven short rules on a poster. No horror — a how-to.
Code: “A sure tone is not proof.” One sentence on the poster.
Workshop: catch one sure detail
On purpose you ask about a thing you can check in a book or on a cover. You look for a date, a name or a number.
-
Pick a fact you have in the textbook on a concrete page: the name of the reader’s author, a year on the cover, a formula, a capital city. Write it on paper. The chatbot cannot see that paper.
-
Open a chatbot and ask about that fact so it has to say a name or a number. Do not add a hint from the paper. Kirim it.
-
Compare the answer with the paper. Does it sit? Great — that is still not proof it always sits. Does it not sit? Write: this is a hallucination. No rage.
-
Second prompt: “When you are not sure, say you do not know. Do not invent books.” Ask about an edge thing (say a made-up title). Watch if it admits uncertainty, or dumps more.
-
In the notebook a sentence: “Hallucination = a made-up fact + a sure tone.” Under it write what happened with you: hit / missed.
Practice: find the suspect
In each sentence underline what you would check elsewhere. Do not check the whole internet now, just mark the hook.
-
“According to a 2019 study by Jana Nováková children sleep 12 hours.” What is suspicious?
-
“In the Battle of White Mountain King Charles XII fell in person.” What do you check first?
-
“Our school has 1847 pupils and a pool under the gym.” Why can the model not know that for sure?
Now you 💪
Go through three checks. At each one tick in your head: can I see it, or not?
- You can say the definition of a hallucination in one sentence without a foreign word, or with it and explain it at once.
- You know that “is that true?” into the same chat is not enough as proof.
- You have in the notebook one own try: hit / missed.
If something is missing, go back to the steps above. This is not a test for marks. It is a safety net, so you go on sure, not confused.
Check: You have one sentence about a hallucination and you know a sure tone is not a mark.
What to take from this lesson
- Hallucination = a made-up fact served with certainty.
- A model would rather fill in a word than say it does not know.
- You check outside the chat: a book, a wiki, a teacher, a catalogue.
- A teacher will catch a detail in a report sooner than a big well-known fact.
- You will need this word all the way to Guard.
- The names in the examples (Bára, Adam) are made up. Do not put your number, email or photo here.
- Next lesson: When you can do this, go to citations: who said it.
