One sentence across three columns

The heading “Grades — March” should sit in the middle above columns A and B. If you type only into A1, it stays on the left. Merge joins cells into one big one.

A merged cell = one address. Into merged A1:B1 you type only into the top-left cell of the range.

A heading above the table

Sheet Grades. Insert a row at the top: click number 1 on the left → right-click → Insert 1 row above.
Data shifts down. Headings now A2 Subject, B2 Grade.
Select A1:B1. Merge → Merge horizontally.
In A1 type Grades — course. Bold. Centre alignment.

When you type into B1 after merge, the text goes into A1 — B1 does not “exist” on its own.

⚠️

Do not merge cells with data. When you merge A3 and B3, the grade column in that row disappears. Merge only headings and empty decoration. Leave data in two columns.

Unmerge

Select the merged area → Merge → Unmerge. The cells come back. The content stays in the top left.

Sheet Survey. Insert a row above the headings.
Merge A1:B1. Text: Favourite snack. Centre, bold.
A2 Snack, B2 Votes. Data from A3.
