Adults pay the rent. You pay respect.
Rent, electricity, water, food in the fridge — those are family needs that adults pay. Not you. Not from pocket money. Not “when you get rich from the course”. When we talk about this, we talk about respect, not about you carrying bills to school.
A child who tries to “chip in for rent” from pocket money often wants to help and at the same time takes on guilt that is not theirs. Do not sit with guilt. Sit with respect. Respect looks like: not wrecking things on purpose, not mocking that “you have a small flat”, not telling classmates numbers you heard from the kitchen.
Ondra hears from the room: “The rent went up.” He is afraid he is to blame for inflation, because he wanted a club. Nela tells him: “That is an adult sentence. You do not pay a club from guilt.” Ondra draws a line: above the line rent (adults), below the line pocket money and moods (him, if he has any).
A classmate asks: “How much do you pay for the flat?” Nela: “I don’t say that.” Not because a flat would be shame. Because rent is not content for a chat. Ondra once said a number he heard wrong. The class made a ranking from it. That hurt more than silence.
When money is talked about at home, do not repeat numbers outside. You may say: “At home adults sort the rent, I sort pocket money.” That is enough. It is true and it exposes nobody.
A line between guilt and respect
Respect is not that you are quiet as a mouse. Respect is that you do not take bills onto yourself and you do not take dignity from others. Mockery of housing, of a car, of someone eating lunch from a packet, is an attack on a family map. The course puts that with the ranking from the riches lesson — and forbids it.
You can help other than with rent: tidying, watching a sibling, truth in the pocket-money notebook, not wasting food. That is teamwork. It is not a wage. For teamwork a reward sometimes comes, sometimes not. A reward is not a wage for rent.
When the family saves, it is not your failure. When a club is dropped, you may be sad. You must not make it into “I am expensive”. You are a child. Things and prices outside are expensive. You are a person in a family.
A teacher and the course do not want a bank statement from you. When someone forces you to say “whether you are poor”, that is an unfit question. You may go to an adult you trust. Family money is not a school presentation.
Nela wants dear shoes. Mum: “This year these, not branded.” Nela is angry. Respect: she does not say at school “mum is stingy” + a rent amount she heard. She says: “This year we take different ones.” That is privacy.
Ondra puts 50 Kč from pocket money on the table “for electricity”. Mum gives it back. She explains: adults pay electricity. Ondra can switch lights off. Let him keep the 50 Kč for a notebook. Help is behaviour, not a child’s bill.
If an adult wants you to pay rent from pocket money or from a job that is not there yet, tell another adult you trust — a second parent, a teacher, a relative. The course does not order what should be at home. It says: a child does not carry the rent. When that is pushed, it is not “money education”, it is overload.
Why this right now
You are in the course Money with Martin, level Persiapan. You can write numbers in a notebook or a table, but the topic is money and decisions, not Excel formulas. The account, the card and the PIN belong to a parent. A child’s email does not belong here. Do not put pocket-money numbers on the network.
This is not the Sheets with Martin course. A table may help, but the mark of success is a decision, not SUM.
You will know this lesson by one sentence: Adults pay the rent. You carry respect, not a bill and not guilt. When you can say it to a parent or a teacher, you have the core. The rest is practice, not magic.
Without the line, pocket money would look like a payment on a flat. With the line you know what your training is. Persiapan’s finale can then name three things that cost money — without making them your guilt.
Four things you will build from the course
The course has four small projects. You do not have to do them all at once. Today you add only what this lesson can do.
🪙 Pocket money
A 14-day record: income, spending, balance. What you do not write down is as if you did not spend it — and that is a lie.
Pocket money is not a rent payment. Write it as training, not as rent.
🚌 Class trip
A budget, a reserve, a plan B. A shared till has rules.
A trip: who has nothing for extra lemonade is not a “burden on the till”. The till has a plan.
🎮 Game shop
V-bucks and a loot box are a purchase. A subscription keeps going.
A game: do not hide a purchase with the words “at least I don’t pay rent”. That is a fake line.
🧾 Stall / mini-company
Cost, price, profit. Three numbers for the class.
A stall at school is not the school’s rent. It is a teacher’s rules and the cost of goods.
Workshop: a line on paper
You will draw a line. Above it three adult things with no amounts. Below it three pocket-money things. No rent numbers.
-
Above the line: say housing, warmth, food. With no Kč. Below the line: a snack from pocket money, a game, a sticker.
-
One sentence of respect: what you can do without paying rent (switch lights off, not wreck, not lie about spending).
-
One sentence of privacy: what you will not say in class about housing and amounts.
-
If kitchen talk makes you tight, write that to a parent or a teacher as a feeling, not as a number from an account.
You count when there is no rent amount on the paper and there is a line. If you copied a number from a payment-slip envelope, delete it. Respect does not need a bill in a notebook.
Practice: guilt, or respect?
Match them. Wrong guilt hurts for nothing.
-
Ondra wants to give 50 Kč for electricity. Why does mum give it back and what may Ondra do instead?
-
A question in class: “How much do you pay for the flat?” An answer in one sentence.
-
Nela is sad a club was dropped. Why is that not “I am expensive”?
-
When would you tell another adult about pressure on a child to pay rent?
Now you 💪
Go through three checks. By each one, tick in your head: do I see it, or not?
- I know adults pay rent and warmth.
- I do not say housing amounts in class.
- I do not take on guilt for prices I do not run.
If something is missing, go back to the steps above. It is not a test for marks. It is a safety net, so you go on with certainty, not with a mess.
Check: You have a line with no rent number and a sentence with which you refuse a question about the flat.
What to take from this lesson
- Rent is an adult agreement. You carry respect.
- Help is behaviour, not a bill from pocket money.
- Privasi of housing is not shame. It is protection.
- Guilt for inflation and rent does not belong to a child.
- Namas in the examples (Nela, Ondra) are made up. Do not put your number, email or photo here.
- Next lesson: When you can do this, go to the next lesson in the same level.
