Money is an agreement

A banknote is not magic. It works because people agreed to give something for it.

Money is an agreement, not magic

Money looks like paper, metal or a number on a phone. By itself it will not feed you, warm you or write your homework. It works because people agreed: when I give you this token, you give me a roll, a ticket or time. If nobody honours that agreement, you are left with a pretty piece of paper.

This is the first sentence of the course. Not “how to get rich”. Not “how to trick a discount”. Agreement. Once you can say it, you stop thinking the number in a shop is a law of nature.

Ema holds a twenty-koruna note. Adam says it is “just paper”. The lemonade stall owner pours a glass for that paper. If Ema brought a rectangle cut from a magazine with the same colour, she would not get lemonade. Not because Adam is mean. Because the stall holder and Ema honour the same token.

At home Ema sees a parent pay by card and a number jump onto the display. No paper moved. The agreement is still the same: the shop gets a token, Ema gets bread. The token can be a coin, a card or a phone. The agreement is one.

💡

When you do not know “what kind of money this is”, ask: who will honour this token? The shop. The driver. The stall at school. If nobody honours it, it is not money that counts — it is a game or a picture.

A token other people take

The money agreement has three sides, even if you cannot see them. You want something. The other person has it. And you both trust the same token. In Czechia that token is the koruna. Shops near you take it. In another country they take another — that is where currency comes in.

Money is not a prize for being a “winner”. It is a tool for exchange. When you spend it, you use the agreement. When you promise it and do not have it, you break the agreement — that hurts, because the other person trusted you.

Trap: thinking the number on the price tag is the thing. A price tag is an offer. The agreement happens only when someone pays and someone hands over the goods. Second trap: “on the phone it is not real money”. It is. The course is about that world, not about a formula in a spreadsheet.

Adam wants a sticker for 15 Kč. He has a twenty. The shop assistant takes twenty and gives five back. Agreement: Adam gives token 20, gets a sticker and token 5 back. If he gave a five-koruna coin and waited for a sticker, no agreement would happen — the tokens do not match.

Ema sees in a game “a pack for 79”. No coin leaves her pocket, but a parent’s card would send the same agreement: 79 Kč from the family’s tokens. The game picture does not sit on the table, but the token does. That is why we ask a parent about a game purchase the same way as a purchase at the newsagent.

⚠️

A stranger who will “swap your paper for better paper” or wants you to “confirm the agreement with a code from an SMS” is not a money teacher. A parent closes a payment agreement, not a chat. If someone rushes you, do not close the agreement.

Why this right now

You are in the course Money with Martin, level Persiapan. You can write numbers in a notebook or a table, but the topic is money and decisions, not Excel formulas. The account, the card and the PIN belong to a parent. A child’s email does not belong here. Do not put pocket-money numbers on the network.

This is not the Sheets with Martin course. A table may help, but the mark of success is a decision, not SUM.

You will know this lesson by one sentence: Money works because people agreed on a token — not because paper can do magic. When you can say it to a parent or a teacher, you have the core. The rest is practice, not magic.

Without that sentence the next lessons look like a shopping list. With it you will see why a card, a coin and a game shop belong together. Persiapan builds a dictionary. When you start writing down pocket money, you will be writing agreements, not “random numbers”.

Four things you will build from the course

The course has four small projects. You do not have to do them all at once. Today you add only what this lesson can do.

🪙 Pocket money

A 14-day record: income, spending, balance. What you do not write down is as if you did not spend it — and that is a lie.

Pocket money is an agreement with a parent: you get tokens an adult stands behind.

🚌 Class trip

A budget, a reserve, a plan B. A shared till has rules.

A shared trip till works only when everyone honours the same token rules.

🎮 Game shop

V-bucks and a loot box are a purchase. A subscription keeps going.

V-bucks are a token inside the game. A roll shop outside will not take it.

🧾 Stall / mini-company

Cost, price, profit. Three numbers for the class.

The lemonade price is an offer of an agreement. The customer may say no.

Workshop: three tokens on the table

Do not look for a formula. Look for what is an agreement and what is only a picture. A notebook is enough. A table too, if you want — but today nobody marks SUM.

  1. On paper write three columns: coin / card / game. Under each column one thing you would pay for that way — say a roll, a ticket, a skin. Do not photo any of it and do not share it.

  2. By each row add: who honours this token? Shop, driver, game company, nobody. If “nobody”, cross it out — it is not money that counts.

  3. Say one sentence out loud: “This is an agreement, not magic.” If it sounds odd, that is fine. It should sound matter-of-fact, not like an ad slogan.

  4. Ask a parent only this: “When we pay by card, is it still koruna?” Do not ask about the account balance. Do not ask about the PIN.

Done when you can point at a coin, a phone and a game shop and say the same word for all of them: agreement. If by a game you say “that is nothing”, go back to the example with 79 Kč. The number is a token. A token is an agreement.

Practice: agreement, or not?

For each situation, decide. You are not guessing the price. You are guessing whether both sides honour the same token.

  1. A friend draws you a “banknote” and wants your snack for it. Agreement? Why not.

  2. A shop takes a twenty for bread at 18 Kč and gives change. Agreement? What is the token, what is the goods.

  3. A game offers “1000 coins free” if you type a code from an email. Agreement, or a trap? A child’s email does not belong here — say why.

  4. A parent pays for a ticket by card. You only hear a beep. Is it still an agreement in koruna? In one sentence.

Now you 💪

Go through three checks. By each one, tick in your head: do I see it, or not?

  1. I can say that money works because of an agreement, not because of the colour of the paper.
  2. I can separate the token (Kč, a card, game coins) from the thing I want for it.
  3. I know a game purchase is an agreement about real koruna, even if I hear no rustle.

If something is missing, go back to the steps above. It is not a test for marks. It is a safety net, so you go on with certainty, not with a mess.

Check: You tell a parent one sentence about the agreement and you give nobody a code, a PIN or a pocket-money number.
