Someone else’s Wi-Fi and sharing location

Two nos

Open Wi-Fi (a station, “Free_Wifi”, a café without a password) is like a conversation in a hall. People around hear more than you think. Do not go there into school, into a parent’s bank, into passwords, into Drive with homework. Mobile data are boring and safer for sign-in. If you must be online, only browsing that does not want a password. Messages can wait. A school test can wait for data or a known network.

Live location on a story and “follow me 24 hours” to a friend from chat — no. Share location with family in Find My / Family Sharing / family location, which a parent switched on. That is a rescue when you get lost. It is not content. It is not proof that you trust a friend. Trust is that you write where you are when you want. Not that they have a map all night.

An open network promises free. You pay with a trail and a password risk. Data in the phone are a pack parents bought. For sign-in they are better.

Wi-Fi named like school, but a teacher does not know it, leave. Ask. A fake name can look friendly. “학교_pupils” at the stop in front of school is not automatically school. Asking costs a second. Signing a password into a fake network costs more.

What to do with Wi-Fi on the phone

We do not attack networks. We do not go into someone else’s passwords. We learn not to connect when it is not ours.

iPhone: Settings → Wi-Fi. On an unknown network without a lock (without a password) do not sign in to accounts. Switch off Auto-참여 on networks you do not know. Settings → Wi-Fi → [i] by the network → switch off Auto-참여. Private Wi-Fi Address can stay on there.

Android: Settings → Network & internet → Internet / Wi-Fi. On an open network: connect only when a parent says so. Switch off auto-join on cafés. Sometimes: Network & internet → Wi-Fi → [network] → auto-join = no.
When you need school outside: mobile data. Or a hotspot from a parent who switched it on. Not “Free_Airport_WiFi”.
After a stranger network, if you were on it by mistake: disconnect. 로그인 to an important account only on data or at home. Do not retype a password at the station.

At home and at school there is Wi-Fi with a password an adult knows. That is different. Drive and school belong there. The difference is a lock. A network without a password is a hall. A network with a password a teacher or mum has is a classroom.

Location: a rescue, not a story

Sharing location with mum when you go from training makes sense. Sharing with the class on a map that can be forwarded does not.

Live on a story shows you are now in this shopping centre. Even to a person you do not follow, if the account is public. Even a screenshot. Even in an hour, when you are already gone — but the entrance and the neighbourhood stayed.

iPhone: Settings → 개인정보 & Security → Location Services. For each app: Never / While Using / Always. Leave “Always” only on things a parent wants (Find My). On networks and games: no. Find My / Family: Settings → [name] → Find My — a parent watches.

Android: Settings → Location. Apps with location: Settings → Apps → [app] → Permissions → Location → While using or Ask. Family Sharing / Family Link a parent switches on. On stories in the app switch off “add a place”, when it is not a park on purpose, but the house.
In the audit switch off location sharing on an app that is not a map, Find My, or family.
A request “send live so I know you are OK” from a friend: write a message “I am OK, I am at grandma’s”. A map all day no.

We do not track classmates. We do not find out where they sleep. Their location is not practice. Your location belongs to family who should pick you up. That is the whole difference.

What to say out loud

To a parent:

“At the station I will not sign in to school on open Wi-Fi. I will use data. And live location I want only with you, not on a story. Can we put that into the rules on the fridge?”

To a friend who wants live:

“I do not share a map. I will write to you when I am there. If it is about safety, tell mum so adults deal with it.”

To a sibling at a café:

“This Wi-Fi has no password. Do not type a game password there. Data. Or we wait at home.”

To a teacher, when you see a network with the school name at a stop:

“Is this Wi-Fi really ours? I do not want to put a school password there if it is not.”

When data run out, that is not a reason to switch on the first network without a lock and go into a parent’s bank. It is a reason to wait, or to ask. A game can wait. Homework that is already on Drive can wait. Homework that lives only in the phone is another problem — that is a backup from the last lesson.

Family rules and audit
