COUNT does not count empty
COUNT counts cells that have a number. Text and empty it skips.
=COUNT(B2:B10)
With a survey: how many rows have a filled vote count? With grades: how many subjects have a grade?
COUNTA counts text too. =COUNTA(A2:A10) — how many snacks are named. Today mainly COUNT on numbers.

Under the table A
Number of rows with a number, B=COUNT(B3:B7). -
When all five cells have a number (even 0), the result 5.

Delete the content of B5 (leave empty). COUNT shows 4.
Zero is a number. COUNT counts it. An empty cell not.
Text 0 vs number 0. Text sits on the left. COUNT does not count it. Type 0 as a number.
Sum of votes — SUM you already know
Under COUNT add A Total votes, B =SUM(B3:B7). With 3+5+2+1+0 = 11. COUNT says how many rows with a number. SUM how many votes together.
Grades — how many subjects

Add a new subject with a grade — COUNT +1. An empty row without a grade COUNT will not lift.

- Survey: COUNT on the votes column. SUM of votes next to it.
- Grades: COUNT how many grades (numbers) in column B.
- An empty cell in the range lowers COUNT.
- A zero in the survey counts as a number.
- You know the difference COUNT (how many cells with a number) vs SUM (sum of values).
