A notebook that does not lie
A pocket-money notebook is a place where three words fall. It does not have to be pretty. It has to be the same tomorrow. Paper, a note on a parent’s phone, a table — the wrapper does not matter. The lie is when the record is not there.
A table may add up. The course will not praise you for a sum as for a formula. It will praise you that the row exists. An empty pretty notebook is worse than an ugly full one.
Jakub opens Sheets, writes SUM, shows a teacher. The rows under it empty. Tereza has squared paper: date, income, spending, balance, a note. Five rows. The course teacher would take Tereza. Jakub has a tool. Tereza has a decision to write.
In the evening Tereza writes juice. Jakub tells himself “tomorrow”. Tomorrow is fog. Fog cannot be added up. Even SUM from fog is a zero that looks clever.
Four columns are enough: date, income, spending, balance. A fifth the word “what”. Nothing more. No colours as a mark. Colours if you enjoy them — not as a stand-in for a number.
A row is a decision
A record is a small decision: “this happened.” Without it the brain draws income bigger and spending smaller. That is not evil. That is memory. A notebook corrects memory.
A time rule: write the same day. If you cannot, write the next day and mark “late”. Late is more honest than nothing. Inventing an amount “so it fits” is worse than a gap.
Sharing: you show the notebook to a parent, not to stories. A link “anyone can edit” on a pocket-money table is a trap. If you want a table, let it live on a parent’s account. You write into it. An adult holds the password.
Do not write a PIN, a card number, an email. Write: 14. 3. spending 25 juice. That is enough. That is the course, not an Excel olympiad.
Tereza wants to shorten it to “it will be fine somehow”. Jakub asks what the lesson A pocket-money notebook is for, when a table can do a sum. A sum does not count respect, a PIN, a trap or an envelope. The core is: A notebook holds rows of truth. An empty SUM is not a cashier.
Adults pay the rent. The card, the account and the PIN belong to a parent. A child’s email does not belong here. Pocket-money numbers do not belong on the network. If you break these rules in the lesson “A pocket-money notebook”, you know a word, not the course.
Tereza’s row: 14.3. | 0 | 25 | 55 | juice machine. Jakub’s: “food”. Which one can say in a week what happened? Tereza’s. Jakub’s adds up fog.
시작 of the week 80. Tereza puts it on the first row as a balance after zero spending, or as a note “start 80”. Both paths work. What matters is that 80 is not written as income every day again.
Practice numbers, not a bank statement. Tereza has 80 Kč in the want envelope. Jakub pushes a step this lesson can name. When Tereza uses the core, either it waits for a parent, or it fits the envelope. If not, anger and a hole are left — proof of pressure, not that the lesson is pointless.
Do not copy a classmate’s notebook “so there is a model”. Those are their agreements. Your notebook with someone else’s numbers is a lie. And do not let a friend browse your amounts for a laugh.
Why this right now
You are in the course Money with Martin, level Cashier. You can write numbers in a notebook or a table, but the topic is money and decisions, not Excel formulas. The account, the card and the PIN belong to a parent. A child’s email does not belong here. Do not put pocket-money numbers on the network.
This is not the Sheets with Martin course. A table may help, but the mark of success is a decision, not SUM.
You will know this lesson by one sentence: A notebook holds rows of truth. An empty SUM is not a cashier. When you can say it to a parent or a teacher, you have the core. The rest is practice, not magic.
Without a notebook, 14 days is only a feeling. With it you can do envelopes, a goal of 200 and a talk with a parent. The tool is a servant. The row is the boss.
If you skip this, the next lesson in level Cashier will stand on fog. The notebook exists. The first row has a date and a start. A formula is not a condition. It is not a test for marks. It is a safety net, so “A pocket-money notebook” is not only a heading.
Four things you will build from the course
The course has four small projects. You do not have to do them all at once. Today you add only what this lesson can do.
🪙 Pocket money
A 14-day record: income, spending, balance. What you do not write down is as if you did not spend it — and that is a lie.
The 14-day project lives in this notebook. Not in the head.
🚌 Class trip
A budget, a reserve, a plan B. A shared till has rules.
A trip: the till has its own notebook. Do not mix it with pocket money.
🎮 Game shop
V-bucks and a loot box are a purchase. A subscription keeps going.
Game spending: a row “game, 79, a parent approved” or “not from mine”.
🧾 Stall / mini-company
Cost, price, profit. Three numbers for the class.
A stall: another notebook. Three numbers later. Today pocket money.
Workshop: four columns
시작 a notebook. Paper is enough. A table may. No child’s email.
-
Headings: date, income, spending, balance, what. First row: today and the start from the pocket.
-
Write one spending or “0 spending”. Zero is a row. It counts.
-
Agree with a parent where the notebook lives (a drawer, a parent’s notes). Not on a public link.
-
Say out loud: “The mark is the row, not a formula.”
You count when the notebook exists and has at least one true row. If you have ten colours and zero amounts, go back to a pencil.
Pocket money: The 14-day project lives in this notebook. Not in the head. Do not write someone else’s amount, a PIN, an IBAN or “how much a classmate gets” next to it. A rule and a practice number are enough — or an honest zero.
Practice: what belongs in a column?
Decide. Cross out what does not belong.
-
A card PIN. Into the notebook? Why not?
-
Spending 6 Kč a roll. Which columns do you fill?
-
시작 50 written every day as income. Why does that spoil the balance?
-
A link to a table “anyone can edit”. What is wrong?
Now you 💪
Go through three checks. By each one, tick in your head: do I see it, or not?
- I have four columns and I know what they are for.
- I can write zero spending as a row.
- The notebook is not a public link or stories.
If something is missing, go back to the steps above. It is not a test for marks. It is a safety net, so you go on with certainty, not with a mess.
Check: The notebook exists. The first row has a date and a start. A formula is not a condition.
What to take from this lesson
- A row is a decision. SUM is a servant.
- Write the same day, or mark “late”.
- The notebook lives with you and a parent, not on the network.
- Someone else’s numbers do not belong in your notebook.
- 이름s in the examples (Tereza, Jakub) are made up. Do not put your number, email or photo here.
- Next lesson: When you can do this, go to the next lesson in the same level.
