Small change and rounding

Small change is not nothing and rounding is not magic

One koruna, two, five, ten. Small change looks like noise. It is not noise. Ten koruna is ten koruna, even if it does not clink proudly. In a year, ten koruna ten times is a hundred. A hundred is already a game or a trip snack.

At the till you will sometimes hear rounding. Sometimes you pay one koruna less, sometimes one koruna more, according to the shop’s rules and cash. It is not that they are robbing you “because you are a child”. It is not that you won a discount either. It is the mechanics of small change. Asking “why?” is fine. Shouting “a scam!” over a koruna is usually not this case.

Filip has to pay 32 Kč. He gives a fifty. He gets coins back. He throws them in a fountain “for luck”. Eliška counts: 18 Kč back. Luck cost a snack.

Another time a bill 18.40 and a card payment. The amount 18.40. A cash payment may end differently according to rounding. Eliška does not panic. Filip does, because he expected “exactly”. A card can do exactly. Coins can do jumps by koruna. Both are honest when the till says so.

A koruna is a koruna

Small change is still tokens. People look down on it because there is a lot of it and it clinks. Looking down is expensive. A pocket-money notebook that ignores under ten lies the same as a notebook that ignores a hundred.

Rounding with cash exists because we no longer carry hellers in a pocket and coins have steps. Rules can differ. You are not learning a paragraph. You are learning not to panic and to read the line on the display. If it does not match, ask calmly. If it matches and it is a koruna, accept the mechanics.

A card often takes the exact amount. That is why the same purchase can end with a different number according to the wrapper. That is not that a card is “more advantageous magic”. It is another wrapper, another precision. You do not make the decision “by card, so I save a koruna” — a parent has the card.

Small change in a pocket gets lost. A bowl at home for coins is boring and it works. Once in a while you count it with a parent and you decide whether it goes into pocket money, into a money box, or for ice cream. Counting is not SUM as a mark. It is respect for tokens you already have.

Eliška: a purchase 47 Kč, she gives 50. Back 3 Kč. She puts three koruna in the bowl, not under the desk. In two weeks there is 42 Kč in the bowl. That is not treasure from a film. That is a snack. Filip would scatter them. The difference is not in intelligence. It is in whether a koruna exists even when it is small.

Display: 19.90, cash, rounding to 20. Filip shouts they robbed him of ten hellers. The cashier shows the line. Filip learns to read, not to report a koruna. If the line showed 50, he may shout — that is no longer rounding, that is a mistake. The difference is in the order of size.

Why this right now

You are in the course Money with Martin, level 준비. You can write numbers in a notebook or a table, but the topic is money and decisions, not Excel formulas. The account, the card and the PIN belong to a parent. A child’s email does not belong here. Do not put pocket-money numbers on the network.

This is not the Sheets with Martin course. A table may help, but the mark of success is a decision, not SUM.

You will know this lesson by one sentence: Small change is still koruna. Rounding is read on the display, not shouted from the side. When you can say it to a parent or a teacher, you have the core. The rest is practice, not magic.

A balance in Cashier can kill even ten koruna that “were not there”. 준비 has to let them live. Otherwise the notebook will lie from the first koruna.

Four things you will build from the course

The course has four small projects. You do not have to do them all at once. Today you add only what this lesson can do.

Workshop: a bowl and a display

At home you find coins (with a parent) and one practice receipt or a made-up display.

1. Count the coins in the bowl or in a pocket. Write the number. It is not a wage. It is an inventory.

2. Write a practice purchase 32 Kč and a payment 50. How much to give back? Count in peace.

3. One sentence: “A koruna is a koruna.” Say it without mocking small change.

4. Ask a parent whether a card at yours takes hellers exactly. No account number. Only yes/no.

You count when you can leave 3 Kč back out of the fountain and you can read 1 Kč of rounding. If you counted someone else’s wallet “for practice”, give it back and practise on yours.

Practice: noise, or a token?

Decide. The numbers are for practice.

1. A purchase 32, a payment 50. How much to give back? Why is that not “some small change”?

2. Filip throws 10 Kč in a fountain. What disappeared from pocket money?

3. Display 19.90 cash to 20. Is that a scam, or rounding? How do you check?

4. Why is “it’s only a koruna from the counter” not an excuse?

1. I take small change as koruna, not as noise.
2. I read rounding on the display, I do not shout scam at once.
3. I do not take someone else’s coins from the counter.

If something is missing, go back to the steps above. It is not a test for marks. It is a safety net, so you go on with certainty, not with a mess.
