Pocket money does not come from a tree
Pocket money in a pocket feels as if it fell from the sky. It did not fall. Someone first exchanged time and work for tokens and then passed a part to you. Even if it is a small part. Even if a parent does it gladly. Gladly does not mean free.
This lesson is not a telling-off. It is a map. When you know where the tokens come from, you stop treating them like a cheat in a game. And you stop feeling ashamed when you have less than a classmate — other families have another map.
Nela gets 100 Kč on Friday. Ondra says: “You’re lucky.” Nela thinks she is lucky. In the evening she sees mum still sitting at a laptop. Not that she “earns because of Nela”. That an adult’s work is long and pocket money is a slice cut from it.
Ondra does not get pocket money. He gets a snack and a ticket. The map is different, not worse. If Nela told Ondra “you’re poor”, she would mix up pocket money with a person’s worth. The course forbids that. A number in a pocket is not a mark for a family.
A question for a parent (one, in peace, with no recording): “Pocket money is from your work, right?” Do not ask about a wage. Do not ask about rent. Yes is enough. The numbers stay at home.
From work to your pocket
An adult exchanges time, skill or care for tokens. Part of the tokens goes to family needs. Part may go to you as pocket money — training, not a director’s wage. Some children have no pocket money and still eat, travel and have warmth. That is fine.
Pocket money can be regular (every Friday) or for a task (mown grass, babysitting). Regular is not automatic. It is still from someone else’s work. For a task is not “you feed the family”. It is a small reward a parent chose. You do not decide whether the rent gets paid.
Comparing pocket money in class is a trap. Same as comparing phones. Each family’s map is private. When someone asks “how much do you get?”, you may say: “I don’t say that.” It is not a secret from shame. It is privacy the course holds.
When pocket money comes late or does not come, do not run to a loan from a friend. Tell a parent. Maybe the reason is in an adult week you cannot see. Empathy is not “I will pay the rent”. Empathy is not putting anyone down.
Nela draws three boxes. 1) Mum’s work. 2) Things the family pays (food, warmth — no amounts). 3) Pocket money 100 Kč. An arrow goes from 1 into 2 and a little into 3. No wage number. Only arrows.
Ondra has box 3 empty. Box 2 full of snacks. The map still holds. Pocket money is not a condition of love. When Nela spends 100 on a mood on Friday and on Monday wants more, she is reaching into a box that is not promised this time. That is a want, not a right.
Do not write the pocket-money amount, a parent’s wage or “how much we have in the account” into a chat, into stories, into a school document with a link for everyone. Family privacy is not content.
Why this right now
You are in the course Money with Martin, level 준비. You can write numbers in a notebook or a table, but the topic is money and decisions, not Excel formulas. The account, the card and the PIN belong to a parent. A child’s email does not belong here. Do not put pocket-money numbers on the network.
This is not the Sheets with Martin course. A table may help, but the mark of success is a decision, not SUM.
You will know this lesson by one sentence: Pocket money is a slice from an adult’s work. It is not a cheat and it is not a mark for who you are. When you can say it to a parent or a teacher, you have the core. The rest is practice, not magic.
When you start writing income, you must know that income has a source. The source is not an automaton. The source is a person who deserves respect — even when they say no.
Four things you will build from the course
The course has four small projects. You do not have to do them all at once. Today you add only what this lesson can do.
🪙 Pocket money
A 14-day record: income, spending, balance. What you do not write down is as if you did not spend it — and that is a lie.
In the notebook write pocket-money income as “from a parent”, not as “from the air”.
🚌 Class trip
A budget, a reserve, a plan B. A shared till has rules.
A trip: if someone has nothing for a souvenir, they are not a worse classmate. The till must not mock that.
🎮 Game shop
V-bucks and a loot box are a purchase. A subscription keeps going.
A game purchase reaches into the same box of an adult’s work — that is why you ask.
🧾 Stall / mini-company
Cost, price, profit. Three numbers for the class.
Stall profit is not pocket money. It is from the team’s work. Pocket money was a gift from other work.
Workshop: three boxes with no wage numbers
You draw a map. No amounts that belong to parents. No photo of a payslip. No email.
-
Three boxes: an adult’s work / family needs / my pocket money. In the third you may write your number if you know it. In the first and second, no amounts.
-
Arrows: from where to where the tokens flow. One sentence under the picture: “Pocket money is a slice, not a tree.”
-
If you have no pocket money, write in the third box “I don’t have it — and that is fine”. It does not break the map.
-
Tell a parent thanks in one sentence, with no request for a raise. Today you practise origin, not bargaining.
The map counts when there is no parent’s wage in it and there is respect. If you wrote a number in the first box “because I saw an SMS”, delete it. That number does not belong here.
Practice: a map, or mockery?
Decide what holds privacy and what breaks it.
-
A classmate asks: “How much pocket money do you get?” What do you answer in one sentence?
-
Why does “I have no pocket money” not mean “my family is worse”?
-
Nela spends Friday’s 100 on Friday evening. Is Monday’s “another 100” a right? Why not?
-
Ondra gets a ticket, not coins. Is that still care? Where is it on the map?
Now you 💪
Go through three checks. By each one, tick in your head: do I see it, or not?
- I can say that pocket money flows from an adult’s work.
- I do not compare pocket money as a mark for a person.
- Family amounts do not belong on the network or in a group chat.
If something is missing, go back to the steps above. It is not a test for marks. It is a safety net, so you go on with certainty, not with a mess.
Check: You have three boxes with no parent’s wage and one sentence of thanks or “it is fine”.
What to take from this lesson
- Pocket money is a slice from an adult’s work, not a tree and not a cheat.
- Another family map is not a worse child.
- Pocket-money amounts and wages do not belong on the network.
- Thanks is not bargaining for a raise.
- 이름s in the examples (Nela, Ondra) are made up. Do not put your number, email or photo here.
- Next lesson: When you can do this, go to the next lesson in the same level.
