Up to a hundred
You already know tens and ones. Now every number to a hundred belongs to you.
First the full tens: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100. Ten steps of ten. Learn to say them like a rhyme.
All the other numbers live between them. 47 lives between 40 and 50. 82 lives between 80 and 90.
A hundred is the first number with three digits: 100. It is ten full crates of ten bottles. A big number? Not really. If you know the tens, a hundred is just the tenth step.
You meet a hundred more often than you think. A 100 Kč note in a purse. A hundred points in a game. A metre has a hundred centimetres. Anyone who knows numbers to a hundred can talk in a shop, in a game and on the playground. It is a big step — and you already have everything you need for it.
Today you will learn to read every number to a hundred, write it and find its place in the row.
Sofie plays Ludo with grandad, but they count the steps on a hundred chart — ten rows of ten. Sofie stands on 37. She rolled a six… “37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43!” Grandad points: “Look, you jumped onto the next row. Each row is one ten.” Sofie looks at the chart: under 37 is 47, under that 57. “One row down is always ten more!” Grandad nods: “Anyone who understands the chart understands a hundred.” Then Sofie jumps down the rows on purpose: 7, 17, 27, 37. The tens grow, the ones stay put. Grandad nods happily.
Say the tens like a rhyme: ten, twenty, thirty… a hundred. Once you know them, every number to a hundred finds its place by itself.
Reading, writing and ordering to 100
Reading a number. You see 63. Front digit: 6 tens = sixty. Back: 3 ones. You read: sixty-three.
Writing a number. You hear “eighty-five”. Eighty = 8 tens, write 8. Five ones, write 5. Written: 85.
Counting in tens. From any number you can jump in tens: 23, 33, 43, 53… The ones do not change, only the ten grows. This is the fastest path through a hundred.
Ordering. Which number is bigger? You know the rule: tens first, then ones. 76 and 67? Seven tens against six — 76 wins.
Neighbours. Before 50 is 49, after 50 is 51. Watch the tens breaks: after 39 comes 40, after 69 comes 70. That is where people slip the most.
Draw a number line in tens: 0, 10, 20… 100. You can roughly place every number: 47 is between 40 and 50, closer to 50. A line to a hundred is the same friend as a line to twenty, just longer.
Write the number seventy-two
I hear seventy — that is 7 tens. I write 7.
I hear two — 2 ones. I write 2.
Written: 72.
Check by reading: 7 tens is seventy, 2 on top. Seventy-two. It matches.
Watch the trap: seventy-two is not 702. Tens and ones live in two digits next to each other.
What comes after 59?
I count: 57, 58, 59… and now?
Nine is the last one. The row is full. I jump to the next ten.
After 59 comes 60.
And on: 61, 62, 63… A tens break is like the end of a line in a book — you carry on at the next line on the left. Try other breaks too: after 29 is 30, after 89 is 90, after 99 is 100.
Order the numbers 45, 54 and 44
I compare tens: 45 has 4, 54 has 5, 44 has 4.
The most tens has 54 — it is the biggest.
Left are 45 and 44. Tens the same (4 and 4), ones decide: 5 > 4. So 45 > 44.
From smallest: 44, 45, 54.
I write it with the crocodile too: 44 < 45 < 54.
The biggest trap is the tens breaks. After 39 it is not “thirty-ten”, but 40. If you are not sure, say the tens rhyme: thirty… forty.
