An icon is a mark. A photo is a scene. On one slide let it be clear which has the main job.
You can do a chart from a table. Today you tell a mark from a scene. An icon is a pictogram: an arrow, a drop, a wheel. A photo is a shot of a scene. If you put a bee icon by a sentence about pollination, it is a mark, not proof of a flower. If you put a photo, it must be possible to tell what it proves.
Imagine twenty icons from a gallery, because it looked modern. The sentence vanishes in pictograms. The class reads symbols and not the title. One flower photo as proof, or three calm icons as step marks. Not both as mush.
Rule: on a slide decide what is main. An icon small by an anchor. A photo big. Do not put an icon across a face in a photo. Do not copy a pack from an advert. A school gallery, Slides, PowerPoint. On a slide decide: a mark small, or a scene big. Twenty icons are noise. A parent’s account. Nothing from an advert under an article.
Klára put twenty icons from a gallery, because it looked modern. The sentence vanished in pictograms. Marek left one flower photo as proof, on another slide three calm icons as step marks. The teacher knew what is proof and what is a mark. In the evening Klára cut the gallery to three icons. The title could be read from the door again. Dad held the account. She said modern looked like work. It looked like noise. Today you pick one main job per slide. Gallery off. The title could be read from the door again.
Before you insert, say: a mark, or a scene? A mark is small. A scene is big. Twenty icons are neither.
One main job: a mark, or a scene
An icon marks a step or a thing with one shape. A photo shows a concrete scene. On one slide let it be clear which has the main job. The second kind only when it has a role, not as filler.
Insert → Image a photo. Or Insert → Shapes / icons from the menu. An icon small by an anchor. A photo big under the title, still with the test “this proves that…”. Do not cover the title. From the back can you tell what it is?
Delete a gallery of twenty icons. Leave three, or zero. Zero is air from Assembler. It holds here too. One main job per slide. A mark small, a scene big. Twenty icons are noise.
Do not copy icons from a random website with a virus. A school gallery, Slides, PowerPoint. Not a downloaded pack from an advert under an article. From the back can you tell what it is? A smear delete. An icon across a face in a photo too. Zero icons is air.
Wrong: a flower photo, five bee icons across it, in the corners still arrows and hearts. From the back a market. A drowned title.
Right: Marek. Either a big flower photo, or three step icons “ask, write, check”. Klára after a cut the same.
An example from a defence: a question-mark icon by an objection may be a mark. A photo of a panel does not belong here. Do not photograph a panel. Three step icons can carry a mark. Twenty icons can carry noise. A flower photo can carry proof when it is big and readable. A question-mark icon by an objection may be a small mark. Do not put a photo of a panel.
Do not copy icons from a random website with a virus. A school gallery, Slides, PowerPoint. Not a downloaded pack from an advert. No company logo “for a nicer look”.
Four things you will build in this course
The course has four small projects. You do not have to do them all at once. Today you add only this:
🎯 A hobby in 5 slides
Five slides about something you like doing. One sentence about what it is. No paragraphs from your notebook.
Hobby: a photo of your scene, not a shop bike icon as proof.
📚 A report
Eight slides for school: a start, three proofs, an end. The title on every slide is a sentence, not “Slide 3”.
Report: a photo with proof, icons at most by three steps.
📊 Survey results
A chart from a table (not a screenshot from chat) and under it where the numbers come from.
Survey: the chart is main. A smiley icon next to columns makes noise.
⚖️ A defence
You say one sentence, show proof, answer “and what if…”. If you do not know, you say I don’t know.
Defence: one mark by an objection is enough. A gallery of icons confuses a panel.
Pick a mark, or a scene
On one slide you decide the main job. You insert only that kind. You delete a gallery of twenty icons.
-
Open a slide with a sentence. Say out loud: main is a scene, or a mark? Scene: Insert → Image, one file, big under the title. Mark: Insert → Shapes or icons, small by an anchor. An adult account.
-
Do not cover the title. Contrast. Present (F5), step back. From the back can you tell what it is? A smear? Make it bigger, or off. Delete an icon across a face in a photo.
-
In PowerPoint almost the same: Insert → Pictures or Insert → Icons. Delete a gallery of twenty icons. Leave three, or zero. Zero is air. Air from Assembler holds.
-
If you have both and you do not know why, leave only the main kind. Delete the second. One slide, one main job.
-
Drive a tick. The workshop ends with a slide where it is clear: a mark, or a scene. Not mush.
Gallery off
Twenty icons are noise. Three marks, or one photo.
-
Count icons on the slide. More than three? Delete.
-
If a photo is main, delete icons in the corners.
-
Present (F5): from the back I can tell what is proof and what is a mark.
Now you 💪
- On the slide it is clear whether a photo or an icon does the main job.
- I do not have a gallery of twenty icons.
- Nothing covers the title. From the back it can be told.
Done when: I picked a mark, or a scene. The gallery is gone. The title lives.
What to take from this lesson
- An icon marks. A photo shows a scene.
- One main job per slide.
- An icon small, a photo big.
- Twenty icons are noise.
- Icons from Slides or school, not from an advert under an article.
- 이름s in the examples (Klára, Marek) are made up. Do not put your number, email or photo on a slide.
