Either day, or night. Not fog.
Contrast is the difference between type and background. When it is small, the text vanishes from the back, even at size 40.
Grey type on a light grey background looks “gentle” on your laptop. On a projector it dies.
Today you pick one mode and keep it. 밝음 background and dark type. Or dark background and light type.
Not both at random across slides. Not rainbow type on a photo. A photo as a background is a trap, because it has light and dark spots.
학교 wants the sentence to survive sun on the board. Boredom wins: white and almost black, or dark blue and white.
Example: pink type on an orange background “matches” at the laptop and vanishes from the back. A white background and almost black text the teacher can read from the window.
Today Slide → Change background → Colour. Not a photo under the text. One mode on all slides. Then a phone photo from the end of the room: if you cannot read the sentence, the back row cannot either.
Tereza put pink type on an orange background because “it matches”. From the back row it matched into nothing.
Jonáš left a light theme: white background, almost black text. Boring. Readable boring. The teacher from the window read the title.
Tereza was angry that she had better taste. Taste without contrast is a private picture. 학교 is not a gallery. After the lesson she put a light colour and black type. She left pink for one line under the title, not for whole letters. Suddenly the sentence lived.
Take a phone photo of the slide from the other end of the room. If you cannot read the sentence on the photo, uncle in the last row at parents’ evening cannot either.
Two modes, no fog
In Google Slides Slide → Change background. Or right-click the area → Background. Colour, not a photo.
You colour type by selecting the text and the A icon with a colour bar.
Rule: light background → type almost black, not medium grey. 어두움 background → type white or very light.
Do not mix on one slide a black and a white paragraph just because “it looks interesting”. Interesting is unreadable.
For 준비 skip a photo on the background. Pick one theme and keep it on all slides. Randomly flipping slide 3 is chaos.
If you are not sure, go back to black and white. That is not giving up. It is craft that the back row can read.
Jonáš: white background, title almost black, body the same, no shadow.
Tereza before the fix: a sunset photo, yellow text on it, in the sun nothing. After the fix: she took the photo off, dark blue background, white text, one accent on a line.
Both paths are fine, because contrast holds. The bad third path: every slide different. One day, one night, one photo. Eyes do not have time to learn where to look.
So one mode for the whole piece of work. When there is a chart, the numbers must keep the same mode too.
An automatic template with grey type on a grey strip is a trap. Rewrite it to almost black. The template is not the teacher. The teacher is the back row.
Four things you will build in this course
The course has four small projects. You do not have to do them all at once. Today you add only this:
🎯 A hobby in 5 slides
Five slides about something you like doing. One sentence about what it is. No paragraphs from your notebook.
Hobby: a calm background, so a photo (when there is one) does not have text across fur.
📚 A report
Eight slides for school: a start, three proofs, an end. The title on every slide is a sentence, not “Slide 3”.
Report: one mode on eight slides, not a rainbow by chapter.
📊 Survey results
A chart from a table (not a screenshot from chat) and under it where the numbers come from.
Survey: chart and title in the same contrast, not a grey axis on grey.
⚖️ A defence
You say one sentence, show proof, answer “and what if…”. If you do not know, you say I don’t know.
Defence: a panel in a big room. Fog is losing the sentence.
Set a mode and keep it
You pick light or dark. You recolour type so a photo from the end of the room still holds the sentence.
-
Slide → Change background → Colour. Pick white or very light, or the other way very dark. Not a photo. If you see Apply to all slides, click it. In PowerPoint almost the same: Design → Format background.
-
Select the title. Type colour icon → black on light, white on dark. The same for the body. Turn off type shadow if it is in the effects menu. A shadow makes a grey edge.
-
If the theme has a grey subtitle, select it and darken it, or delete it. Grey 50 % on white vanishes from the back. Go almost to black.
-
Add a bad colour on purpose (light grey on white), step back, put it back. So you know what fog looks like. Then Present (F5) and read. If you have to guess a letter, the colour is wrong.
-
Check the second slide inherited the background. If not, apply to all again. Do not mix slide 1 day and slide 2 night.
Hunting fog
Find places where the template hid text in grey, and fix them.
-
With a phone photo from far away check the title. Cannot read it? 어두움er type or a lighter background.
-
Check both slides have the same mode.
-
Turn off a fancy background gradient if it makes one corner white and the other dark under the text.
Now you 💪
- The background is a solid colour, not a random photo under the type.
- Type is almost black on light, or white on dark.
- Both slides keep the same mode, not one day and one night.
Done when: The sentence holds contrast from far away and the whole presentation has one day or night mode.
What to take from this lesson
- Contrast = type versus background, not “a nice colour”.
- Grey on grey dies from the back.
- One mode for the whole piece of work.
- A photo as a background under text is a trap.
- A template is not the law. Rewrite grey type.
- 이름s in the examples (Tereza, Jonáš) are made up. Do not put your number, email or photo on a slide.
