Biometrics vs. PIN

Fingerprint, face or PIN — what to use when.

A phone lock is not an account password

Biometrics = unlocking with the body: a fingerprint, a face. PIN = numbers or a code you type. Both are a phone lock — they unlock a bit of metal in your pocket. They are not a password into school or a game.

The difference:

A parent decides with you what the phone can do. Sometimes PIN + biometrics together — PIN as backup.

💡

You do not send a phone PIN in chat. It is not a “shorter password for a game”. It is a device lock. If someone sees it over your shoulder, change it with a parent.

When a PIN, when a fingerprint

Fingerprint / face — at home, in the car with a parent, ordinary unlocking. Comfortable.

PIN — at school, in the playground, when people around could put your finger on it. When you would rather not be unlocked while you sleep.

The rule: I do not lend an unlocked phone “just for a minute”. Whoever holds it is in your apps.

What biometrics does not solve

So still: sign out on someone else’s computer. A phone lock ≠ a school account.

What to say

“Give a fingerprint so I can download something for you.”

“No. Unlocking is only for me. Ask a parent.”

“What is your PIN?”

“I will not say. A phone lock is not a topic for chat.”

How it fits the projects

📱 Phone audit. Point 1: lock yes, PIN is not a date. Point 2: biometrics — who can unlock?

🏠 Family rules. I do not lend an unlocked phone. PIN not into chat.

Now you 💪

With a parent, check the phone lock. Is the PIN different from a date? Have you agreed when you do not lend an unlocked phone?

  1. Settings → screen lock. PIN: it is not a year of birth.

  2. Agree: when biometrics is enough, when a PIN is better (at school).

  3. Add to the audit: lock yes, I lend it only locked or not at all.

Check: Biometrics ≠ an account password. You do not lend an unlocked phone. The PIN is not in chat.
