A footprint is not a bogeyman — it is footprints in the snow

A digital footprint is everything that stays after you on the internet: a post, a comment, a like, a photo, a nick in a game, a message in a group. Some of it disappears. Some of it stays. Someone saves a screenshot, even if you delete it.

A footprint is not only “what I wrote yesterday”. It is also:

what is on your profile now
what someone tagged you in without asking
what you sent into a group with fifty people
what an app collects — location, ads, history (more on that in the Shadow level)

You do not have to fear every click. You need to know: not everything can be deleted. And not everything can be taken back.

A test before sending: “Would I show this to a teacher tomorrow without shame?” If not, I do not send it. Then the footprint will be smaller.

What makes a footprint bigger

full name + school + a photo on a public profile
fights in public comments under a video
photos without other people’s permission
“deleted” messages that someone already photographed
the same nickname everywhere — it is easier for someone to connect you

What makes a footprint smaller

a nickname without a surname in games
a private profile, where it is possible
fewer personal details in the bio
deleting old things with a parent — go through the profile once in a while
not talking to strange “adults” in a private chat

A footprint is not a punishment. It is reality. Like footprints: sometimes you will see where you went. That is why you learn to walk on the pavement, not on the road.

A footprint and the projects

👤 Safer profile. What will stay on the profile in a year? What would you change?

📱 Phone audit. Which apps see location, photos, contacts? For now only a list — detail in the audit.

🏫 Campaign for the class. A sentence for the poster: Before you send — imagine tomorrow at the board.

What to say to a friend

“I would not send this, even if we delete it. Someone can still save it.”

Not a sermon. You simply do not send it. And if they push, you show an adult.

Search for your nickname (with a parent) in the browser — just one you use in a game or on a network. What do you find?

A parent looks up the nickname. You watch what is public. You do not click on weird pages.
One thing to edit: hide the profile, change the bio, delete an old comment — with a parent.
