Parental controls are not a punishment
Parental controls (Family Link, Screen Time, Family Sharing) a parent sets: how many hours, which apps, when the phone sleeps. It is not “a parent spies on you” when you agreed it.
It is an agreement. Family rules on the fridge say phone away at 21:00. Parental controls sometimes watch that technically. Going around is not a cleverness game — it is breaking an agreement.
What parental controls can:
- an hour limit on games
- approve new apps
- see how much time where (not always every message)
- switch the phone off at night
What they cannot replace:
- a conversation at home
- trust, when something bad — you go to a parent yourself
- cyberbullying — a teacher + a parent deal with it, not only a lock
Ask a parent: What does family control do at ours? What not? When you know the rules, you do not have to guess. An agreement is calmer than secret going around.
How to talk it through at home
-
With a parent: What limits do we have? Until when the phone? Which apps?
-
One sentence into family rules: Phone away at [time]. New apps with a parent.
-
If a limit hurts — talk, do not go around. “I need more time for homework” is a sentence. A secret VPN no.
What to say at home
To a parent:
“I want to know what control does at ours. And when something bad online — I would rather tell you myself than you think I am hiding.”
To a sibling:
“Going around control will get us both in trouble. If you need an exception, tell mum.”
This lesson is not a how-to for going around Family Link, a VPN against a parent or fake accounts “just for games”. That breaks an agreement and opens doors Shadow was closing.
Now you 💪
Ask a parent about one control rule. Write it into family rules.
Practise the sentence: I would rather tell you a problem myself. So a parent knows you can come.
Check: You know what control does at yours. A rule on the fridge. Going around is not the goal of the course.
What to take from this lesson
- Parental controls = an agreement, not a spy without rules.
- Ask what holds at yours.
- A problem you would rather say yourself.
- Going around is not safety — it is breaking trust.
