Delete what does not belong to the sentence
One sentence: “A hamster sleeps in the day, so I do not wake it in the morning.”
On a slide belongs only what holds this sentence. A meme, a joke and a fifth cage photo do not belong here, even if they are nice.
Jonáš put eight memes. The class laughed at the memes. They did not make the hamster. The bell rang.
Tereza deleted the memes. She left the problem (in the morning she wakes it) and the rule (let it sleep). She got to the end.
When something is nice, but it is not for the sentence, you have three places:
- Delete — the strongest.
- 备注s under the slide — you see it, the class does not.
- 备注book — you know it, it does not belong on the wall.
Nice is not enough. Ask: Does this help the sentence about what this is about? If not, off the wall.
Three places, not three excuses
Open the presentation. At every slide and every bullet ask: does this help the sentence?
If not:
- Delete the slide — on the left click the thumbnail, Delete key. In PowerPoint the same.
- 备注s — under the slide is the 备注s field. There you may have a sentence you want to say out loud. The class does not see it on the wall.
- 备注book — facts you want to know, but they do not fit in three minutes.
Leave none of that “just in case” on the wall. Safety is that the class makes one sentence and you make the time.
Typical filler kids like putting: a second scene, twenty photos of the same, a joke only for mates, a quote that sounds clever and leads nowhere, thanks as its own slide, a hobby history from year zero. A hobby has a scene from this week. A hobby family tree belongs in the notebook.
After deleting check the order on the left: beginning, middle, end. Do not fill a hole with a new meme.
Do not delete that one sentence from fear that you have “too few slides”. A little clean is more than a lot of filler. The teacher wants a topic, not an album.
Four things you will build in this course
The course has four small projects. You do not have to do them all at once. Today you add only this:
🎯 A hobby in 5 slides
Five slides about something you like doing. One sentence about what it is. No paragraphs from your notebook.
Only after deleting. Five fillers are not five slides.
📚 A report
Eight slides for school: a start, three proofs, an end. The title on every slide is a sentence, not “Slide 3”.
The textbook does not have to be whole on the wall. You pick what carries the sentence.
📊 Survey results
A chart from a table (not a screenshot from chat) and under it where the numbers come from.
Not each answer its own slide. A summary is enough.
⚖️ A defence
You say one sentence, show proof, answer “and what if…”. If you do not know, you say I don’t know.
Filler in front of a teacher steals minutes you need for proof.
Try it now in Google Slides
Open the file under a parent’s or the school’s account. In PowerPoint the ideas are the same, only different buttons.
-
Write on paper one sentence about what the presentation is about. For example the hamster sentence. Without a sentence you do not know what to delete.
-
Open Google Slides. On the left are small pictures of slides. Click the first. Read the title. Does it help the sentence? If not, Delete.
-
On a slide you want to say out loud but not show, click 备注s at the bottom. Write one sentence there. On the wall a short title stays.
-
Facts you know but that do not belong on the wall, leave in the notebook. Do not write them on a slide “just in case”.
-
开始 Present (F5). Step back to the door. Can you read what this is about, without memes? Save. In PowerPoint F5 too.
Once more
Practise the filter on one slide that is overcrowded.
-
Find a slide with more than one idea. Leave one. Delete the others, or into notes.
-
Tell a parent out loud: This is the sentence. This I deleted, because it does not belong to it.
-
Count the slides on the left. If there are more than five for a hobby, keep deleting. Five is a ceiling, not a task to fill.
Now you 💪
- You have on paper one sentence about what this is about.
- On the wall there is no meme that does not prove that sentence.
- What you want to say extra is in notes or in the notebook — not on another slide.
Done when: You can show what you deleted and why. The class will see a sentence, not an album.
What to take from this lesson
- On a slide belongs only what helps one sentence.
- Nice is not enough. Ask: what is this for the class?
- Deleting is fine. 备注s are for you. A notebook is for learning.
- Five clean slides are better than twenty fillers.
- 姓名s in the examples (Jonáš, Tereza) are made up. Do not put your number, email or photo on a slide.
