Feedback from a parent

Ask for three things: the sentence, time, readability. Not whether it is pretty.

Ask about the sentence, time and from the back. Not whether it matches.

A parent likes to say it is pretty. Pretty will not help you.

What helps: they heard the sentence, you made the time, it could be read from the back. You have to ask for those three things, or you get colour and a pat. A pat is nice. It will not fix the sentence.

Today before listening you give the ear a task. Paper with three questions. A parent ticks. You cut by the ticks, not by “not enough pink”.

You take one to three fixes. A clearer sentence, a slide gone, bigger type. That is Storyteller feedback. It is not a vote on taste.

Example: “Did you like it?” — “Yeah, pretty.” Nothing changed. Paper with three questions: did you hear the sentence? Did I make the time? Could it be read from the door? Mum: the sentence no. Title bigger. The second listen hit.

Today you give the ear a task before Present (F5). You stay quiet until thanks at the end. You write it down. You cut one main hole. You thank for a concrete no, not for being clever.

Adam: “Did you like it?” Mum: “Yeah, pretty.” Nothing changed.

Ema gave paper: did you hear the sentence? Did I make the time? Could it be read from the door? Mum: the sentence no, time yes, type yes. Ema made the sentence on the title bigger. The second listen mum hit the sentence.

Feedback worked because it had a goal. Adam had no goal. He got a pat. A weak title stayed. At the board mum was not there. The weak title was. Today be Ema. Paper. Three. Not “liked it”.

💡

When you hear only pretty, repeat the question: and did you hear what this is about, in one sentence? Without that sentence feedback has not started.

Three questions drive the fix

Question 1: What was my sentence about what this is about? If they do not hear it, title and hook and end.

Question 2: Did I come in on time? If not, delete a slide or words.

Question 3: Did you read the title from the door? If not, type and contrast.

Do not ask more, unless there is time for one free: where did you switch off? Switching off = filler or reading. Fix one main one. Thank for the concrete. Do not argue about taste.

Write the answers into the title notes so they do not vanish. Do not leave the paper at school with an email.

A parent does not have to know foreign words. Say the sentence about what this is about. Time. From the door. Order of holes: sentence first, time second, eyes third. One fix today. The rest notebook. Feedback does not order a sixth slide.

Ema paper, mum “the sentence no”, title bigger and a sharper verb, second Present hit.

Adam with no paper, pretty, at the board weak. After the fix Adam used paper, mum said the sentence, type from 24 to 40. 准备课 holds in feedback too.

The example is a protocol, not a hobby. 复制 her questions. A stopwatch next to mum. Mum steps back to the door. You at the table. Then paper. Then a cut. Then a second hitting of the sentence.

If mum hears the sentence at once, ask about time and eyes. Maybe 完成. That is feedback too. There is no duty to cut something. The duty is to ask right.

⚠️

Do not drag a parent into a fight that “you don’t get it, it is not for you”. A school lesson has ears that do not live it too. That is a test. Not an insult.

Four things you will build in this course

The course has four small projects. You do not have to do them all at once. Today you add only this:

🎯 A hobby in 5 slides

Five slides about something you like doing. One sentence about what it is. No paragraphs from your notebook.

Hobby: a parent repeats the sentence — that is the project mark.

📚 A report

Eight slides for school: a start, three proofs, an end. The title on every slide is a sentence, not “Slide 3”.

Report: the same three questions before you hand in eight slides.

📊 Survey results

A chart from a table (not a screenshot from chat) and under it where the numbers come from.

Survey: readability of the number from the back is question 3.

⚖️ A defence

You say one sentence, show proof, answer “and what if…”. If you do not know, you say I don’t know.

Defence: a panel is an ear. You train asking for what you want back.

Paper with three questions and one cut

You give the ear a task, stay quiet during the presentation, write it down, cut one main hole, check with a second listen, thank for a concrete no.

  1. Write on paper three questions: 1 What was the sentence about what this is about? 2 Did I make the time on the stopwatch? 3 Could the title be read from the door? Give paper and a pencil to a parent. A stopwatch. Let them step back to the door. You at the computer. Present (F5). Stay quiet until thanks at the end.

  2. After thanks do not touch the slides. Let them finish the paper. Read. If it is only pretty, repeat question 1. Write the answers into the title notes. Not onto the network.

  3. Pick one main hole in the order sentence, time, eyes. Fix: a sharper sentence, Slide → Delete, size 40, contrast. Not a sixth slide. Law of five. Present again. Question 1 out loud again. Hit? End of cut. In PowerPoint almost the same: the same Present (F5) and notes.

  4. Thank for a concrete answer, not for pretty. Pretty may come extra, after the three answers. One file. Truth after the cut. Not a copy final2.

  5. Save. Do not leave the paper at school with an email. 复制 the three questions into a notebook for next time. The workshop ends with a hit sentence or a conscious cut toward it. Not a pat.

Pretty is not enough

Teach the ear that it should return a sentence. Without a sentence you have not started yet.

  1. Replace the question “did you like it” with a question about the sentence.

  2. Fix only one main hole, even if the paper shouts three.

  3. Thank in one sentence for a concrete “I did not hear the sentence”, not for being clever.

Now you 💪

  1. A parent got three questions, not a free liked-it.
  2. After feedback there is at most one conscious cut in the original.
  3. I can thank for a concrete “I did not hear the sentence”.

Done when: I have a record of three answers and the original after one cut. The sentence can be repeated.
