Sheets with Martin

Excel and Google Sheets for kids — 12 lessons per level, formulas, charts, a class survey.

The default tool is Google Sheets (free in the browser). Excel is almost the same — when a formula has another name, the lesson shows both. This is not محترف البيانات: no Git, no SQL, no code.

A spreadsheet is a box for numbers. Change one mark and the average updates itself. Word cannot do that, and a paper notebook cannot either. You will learn cell addresses, the equals sign, SUM, charts, filters, IF, and one screen you can hand in at school. Each level has 12 lessons — same as coding with البنّاء.

Four projects the lessons come back to: grade average, pocket money, class survey and a mini dashboard. You do not have to finish them all at once. المستويات 1–2 are free. From Chart maker a parent pays once — separately from coding (الخبير does not unlock this). A school can buy a class licence.

• Cell A1 = column A, row 1. Workbook = the whole file. Sheet = the tab at the bottom. Plus adds a sheet, double-click renames it.
• A formula starts with =. Without the equals sign it is text. * is times, / is divide, brackets like in maths.
• Range B2:B6 means from–to. SUM adds, AVERAGE averages, MAX finds the biggest.
• =IF(B2>3,"practice","ok"). Text in quotes. If the formula shouts, try a semicolon ; or a comma , — it depends on the language of the account.
• The little square in the corner of a cell fills a series and copies a formula. B2 moves to B3. $F$1 (key F4) stays put when you drag.
• A number sits on the right, text often on the left. 10 points will not add up. 0.2 + percent format = 20%. 20 + percent = 2000%.
• A filter hides rows, it does not delete them. Sorting moves the whole row. If you sort only one column, you mix up marks and subjects.
• Chart: select headings and data → Insert → Chart. The chart title is a sentence, not “Chart 1”. For school: File → Download → PDF, or a picture of the chart.
• Share: the teacher often only needs view. “Anyone with the link can edit” is a key under the doormat. Do not copy numbers into a chat — the workbook is the source.

• Cell — one box. The address is column + row, letter first: B3, not 3B.
• Formula bar — the strip at the top. It shows what is really in the cell, even if you only see the result.
• Formula — a calculation that starts with equals. Change an input, the result updates.
• Function — a ready-made calculation with a name: SUM, IF, XLOOKUP.
• Range — from–to, with a colon. A1:A10 is ten cells in a column.
• Filter — arrows on the headings. It hides rows; “select all” brings them back.
• Lookup list — codes and names on their own sheet. Other sheets look at it so a name is not typed twice.
• Dashboard — one page: three numbers and one chart. Numbers belong here as links to another sheet, not as copied values.
• Format — how a number looks (£, %). The value inside does not change.
