Translation and a meaning check

Translation is not a swap of words. It is meaning you must be able to say in both languages.

First meaning. Then words. Then meaning again.

A model translates fast and mixes idioms, articles, school meaning. “Office” is not always a government office. “Story problem” is not the same in every maths book. Helper may translate when you check meaning: close, say in English what it is meant to mean, compare with the brief. Into a hand-in of language work a raw output you do not get does not belong. A teacher will ask about a word. You can, or you cannot. When you cannot, it was not your translation. It was a bundle. At home you may let it translate a brief you do not get — and then ask a person whether the meaning sits. In a test a translator under the desk is a pitch foul. Same two pitches from Prep.

Ema pastes a composition and wants “into French, so it looks good”. Adam reads the output and lets Ema say the first sentence in French. Ema cannot. A bundle. They delete. They take one sentence Ema can say in English. A translation. Ema says it. She fixes one word from a dictionary, not from a whole new paragraph. A teacher would ask about this. Ema would answer. A neighbour’s bundle would fall on the second word. Meaning won over volume. Ema writes: I translate what I can say. The rest I learn, I do not let it translate a brain replacement.

💡

One sentence at a time. A whole composition at once is bait of a bundle you cannot carry at the board.

A bundle, a sentence, a dictionary, a pitch

A bundle: a whole text there and back, you do not get it. A sentence: you can carry saying it. A dictionary / a textbook: a disputed word. A pitch: a test with no window. False friends (words that look the same and mean something else) are Detective hooks in a language. After a translation of a school brief into English, check with a teacher when a mark hangs on it — a model can shift a brief. A shifted brief = wrong work, even when honest. Better a question to a person. Helper is not an English teacher with a contract. It is scissors. You are a pupil who must carry a sentence.

A chain.

  1. My English sentence that I can say.
  2. “Translate into school-level French / German / Spanish (Year 6/7). No new ideas.”
  3. Close. Say the translation out loud. Can you?
  4. “Back into English in one sentence, the content.” Does it sit with step 1?
  5. A disputed word: a dictionary, not another paragraph.

Wrong: a whole report into DE and hand in. At the board, silence.

⚠️

Do not let it translate someone else’s work and hand it in as yours in another language. That is the same hand-in of someone else’s, only in another kit.

Why this right now

You are in the course Ask with Martin, level Helper. You work in a chatbot (ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude) — same game, different brand. No code. A parent or the school creates the account. A child’s email does not belong here.

This is not the Inventor level. There you build a chatbot on your own website. Here you are a user: a question, a check, a citation.

You will know this lesson by one sentence: You translate sentences you can carry saying. You do not hand in a bundle you do not get. When you can say it to a parent or a teacher, you have got the core. The rest is practice, not magic.

You can do scissors. Language is another wrap. Tomorrow a learning plan — without meaning you would plan bundles, not graft.

Four things you will build in this course

The course has four small projects. You do not have to do them all at once. Today you add only what this lesson can do.

🏫 A report with citations

An outline, three sources that exist, and a sentence in your own words. AI must not be the only author.

A source in another language: check meaning, the citation still seen.

📝 Test training

Coach role: let it ask, do not let it say the answer. You count / answer yourself.

A quiz in the language of the test. Do not translate a test under the desk.

📅 Family planner

Tasks for the week (not passwords, not marks). A parent sees the plan, not your chat.

Planner in English, so a parent can read.

📜 An AI code for the class

Seven short rules on a poster. No horror — a how-to.

Code: “We do not hand in a bundle with no meaning.”

Workshop: three sentences, three returns

Three of your English sentences from the topic. One by one translate, say, return the meaning. No composition bundle.

  1. Write three sentences in English from notes. You can say them.

  2. M1 a translation of sentence 1, year-group level. Close, say, return to English. Does it sit?

  3. Sentences 2 and 3 the same. A disputed word into a dictionary.

  4. When the model adds an idea, cross it out. Detective.

  5. A trail: translation sentence by sentence. A bundle no.

Practice: can you carry saying it?

A bundle, or a sentence? What do you do?

  1. A whole composition into French, you know five words.

  2. One sentence, you can say it, a check back.

  3. A translation of a brief that shifted meaning — to whom?

Now you 💪

Go through three checks. At each one tick in your head: can I see it, or not?

  1. One sentence at a time, not a bundle.
  2. You can say the translated one.
  3. You do not hand in someone else’s work in another language.

If something is missing, go back to the steps above. This is not a test for marks. It is a safety net, so you go on sure, not confused.

Check: Three sentences survived meaning there and back. A bundle stayed in the bin.
