Price vs. value

Price is not the same as value

Price is an agreement offered on a sign: “we want 89 Kč.” Value is a quiet question: what will this give me once I have it? The same price can be expensive or cheap for you — depending on whether you use the thing, or hate it in a week.

The course does not teach you “always buy the cheapest”. It teaches you not to mix up the sign with usefulness. A cheap thing you do not want is expensive. A dearer thing you really wear can be reasonable. The decision is yours. The number on the sign is only the start.

Sofie sees headphones for 199 Kč and headphones for 79 Kč. Matyáš shouts “take the 79 ones, you will be richer!” Sofie already bought a 79 pair. In a month they stopped playing. Now she asks: will these last until the trip, or end in a drawer again?

Matyáš bought a skin for 149 Kč. In the game it shines. At school it does not help with a snack. The price was clear. The value depends on whether he still likes it in a week, or whether he only wanted the feeling “I have it too”. Sofie writes two words: sign / usefulness. Not a formula. A decision.

The sign and the usefulness

Price is public. Anyone who looks can see it. Value is private. It depends on you, on time, on what you already have. That is why two people at the same sign can decide differently and both be right.

School sometimes treats “the right answer” as one number. Here it is not like that. Right is being able to say a reason. “I take 199, because the 79 ones died on me twice” is a reason. “I take 79, because the smaller number wins” is a shortcut that will hurt later.

Value is not the same as “I get a cool photo out of it”. A cool photo is a mood. A mood fades. Value holds when the thing still does a job: it warms, it carries, it plays, it fills you. If it only does a mood, admit that. You may buy a mood too — from pocket money, on purpose, not as an “investment”.

This course is not a stock market. It does not promise that a cheap buy will make you rich. It promises you will stop mixing up a sign with being clever.

Matyáš has 200 Kč of pocket money. A bottle of water in a machine 35 Kč. A bottle from home 0 Kč extra — the family already bought the water. The machine’s price is 35. Value: not having to go to a tap. Sometimes that makes sense (a rush, a trip). Sometimes it is a tax for comfort you pay three times a week, and in a month it is more than a game.

Sofie compares a notebook for 25 Kč and a notebook for 25 Kč with a “limited” sticker. The same paper. A different mood sign. The sticker’s value is a mood. If she wants it, let her say that out loud. If she thinks she is smarter because she bought limited, she is mixing marketing with usefulness.

Why this right now

You are in the course Money with Martin, level Prep. You can write numbers in a notebook or a table, but the topic is money and decisions, not Excel formulas. The account, the card and the PIN belong to a parent. A child’s email does not belong here. Do not put pocket-money numbers on the network.

This is not the Sheets with Martin course. A table may help, but the mark of success is a decision, not SUM.

You will know this lesson by one sentence: Price is a number on a sign. Value is what it will do in your life. When you can say it to a parent or a teacher, you have the core. The rest is practice, not magic.

Four things you will build from the course

The course has four small projects. You do not have to do them all at once. Today you add only what this lesson can do.

Workshop: two words by one sign

Pick one thing you would like to buy this year. You do not have to buy it. You are training words.

1. Write the name of the thing and the price you saw (an estimate is fine if you are not sure — mark the word estimate).

2. Under that, two sentences: What will this do for me in a week? and What will this do for me in a month? If you do not know, write “I don’t know” — that is honest.

3. Tick: usefulness / mood / both. Mood is allowed. Just do not hide it behind the word “a bargain”.

4. Tell a parent only the reason, not a request to buy. Today you practise a sentence, not a purchase.

The workshop counts when you can say price and value in two different sentences. If you only say “it is cheap”, you are not done yet. Cheap is about the sign. Value is about the week after.

Practice: the sign, or the usefulness?

On each row, say what is price and what is value. The numbers are for practice.

1. A cap 149 Kč. In winter you wear it every day. What is the sign, what is the usefulness?

2. A pack of cards 99 Kč. After the weekend it lies under the bed. What is left of the value?

3. The same cheese in one shop 32 Kč, in another 28 Kč. Is 28 always smarter? When not (travel, time)?

4. A “limited” sticker extra for +20 Kč. Is that usefulness of the paper, or a mood?

Go through three checks. By each one, tick in your head: do I see it, or not?

1. I can say the difference between price and value in one sentence.
2. I do not take the lowest number automatically as a win.
3. I can name a mood — I do not hide it behind “a bargain”.

If something is missing, go back to the steps above. It is not a test for marks. It is a safety net, so you go on with certainty, not with a mess.
