Thousands, hundred thousands, a million
The floors of numbers do not end at hundreds. Above hundreds live thousands, above them ten thousands, hundred thousands and at the end a million — a one with six zeros: 1 000 000.
So that big numbers can be read, they are written in threes from the end with spaces: 245 300, not 245300. Each trio is one “word”: 245 300 you read “two hundred and forty-five thousand three hundred”. The space tells you where the thousands end.
You meet big numbers every day: a town has 95 000 people, a car costs 380 000 Kč, a video has 1 000 000 views. Whoever can read them understands the news and price tags.
Good news: you are not learning anything new to calculate. Floors work the same as to a thousand, there are just more of them. Written adding under each other runs the same too — it only has more columns.
Ema plays “who reads the newspaper number first” with dad. Dad shows: 386 000. Ema starts: “Three hundred and eighty-six… thousand!” Point. Then Ema shows dad: 1 000 000. “A million,” dad says without blinking. Ema tries a trick: 40 806. Dad reads slowly: “Forty thousand eight hundred and six.” Ema checks in threes: 40 | 806. It fits. She writes the trick in her notebook: first the space, then the reading — the trio before the space is read with the extra word “thousand”.
Read big numbers from the space: what is before the space, read and add “thousand”, what is after it, read normally. 245 300 → “245 thousand” + “300”.
Floors above hundreds and reading in threes
The ladder of floors from the bottom: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, a million. Each floor is ten times bigger than the one under it — still the same rule as with small numbers.
Writing in threes: from the end of the number count threes and split with a space: 1234567 → 1 234 567. Threes from the end: 567 (hundreds, tens, ones), 234 (thousands), 1 (million).
Reading:
- Read the part before the first space and add “thousand” (or “million” at the second space).
- Read the rest normally.
245 300 → “two hundred and forty-five thousand” + “three hundred”.
Writing from dictation is the other way — and there a zero trap waits. “Forty thousand eight hundred and six”: the thousand part is 40, the rest 806 → 40 806. The rest must always have three digits — that is why 806, with a zero in the middle, because “eight hundred and six” without thinking could easily land as 86 and the number would shrink.
Comparing: first count the digits. The longer number wins: 99 999 < 100 000. Numbers of the same length you compare from the left digit by digit, as you already know.
Reading with a space
Read: 386 000, 52 417, 700 003.
386 000: before the space 386 → “three hundred and eighty-six thousand”. After the space zeros → nothing extra is added.
52 417: “fifty-two thousand” + “four hundred and seventeen”.
700 003: “seven hundred thousand” + “three”. Those four zeros in the middle are not read — they only hold the floors, so the three stays on the ones.
Writing from dictation
Write: “sixty-three thousand and fifty”.
Step 1: thousand part: 63.
Step 2: the rest: “fifty” = 50. But watch — the rest must have three digits: 050.
Step 3: put together: 63 050.
Check by reading: 63 | 050 → “sixty-three thousand” + “fifty”. It fits.
If you wrote only 6 350, it would read “six thousand three hundred and fifty” — a completely different number.
Comparing big numbers
Which is more: 98 500, or 102 000?
Step 1: I count the digits: 98 500 has five, 102 000 has six.
Step 2: the longer wins: 102 000 > 98 500.
Do not be fooled by nines at the start — the length of the number decides before the digits. Ninety-eight thousand is less than one hundred and two thousand, even though a nine looks grand.
And a million? 1 000 000 has seven digits — it beats every six-digit number.
Zeros inside big numbers must not get lost. “Seven hundred thousand and three” is 700 003 — four zeros in the middle hold the floors. If you write 7 003, almost the whole number has run away. Write in threes and check by reading out loud.
