The big Number kid test
You have reached the end of the level. Look back: at the start you counted sweets to ten. Today you add to a hundred, read clocks, give change and draw line segments.
The finale is a show of everything you can do. No new topic — just events like on sports day. Numbers and comparing. Adding and subtracting to 100. Splits, even and odd. Clocks, money, measuring. Shapes and solids. And word problems, the royal event.
Do not fear mistakes. A mistake in the finale is good news: it tells you exactly which lesson to go back to.
How does the finale go? Six events, each from a different part of the course. Nobody rushes you, no time is measured. You may take helpers: a number line, bricks, coins. A Number kid is not someone who counts without helpers — but someone who gets to the right result and can check it.
Get paper, a pencil, a ruler and coins. Let’s go. The Number kid title is waiting.
All six friends met at Ema’s for the big finale. Ema handed out papers: “Six events. Anyone who gets through all of them is a Number kid.” Adam flies through adding, then sticks on clocks — quarter to eight he has to think through twice. Tereza and Jonáš draw circles for the word problem. Sofie watches Filip’s change: “57 and 3 is 60, and 40 is 100. Right!” In the evening they all have it done. Ema announces with a flourish: “Six new Number kids!” And she hands out paper medals — round like a circle.
Do not do the finale all at once. Split it over two days if you like. A Number kid is known by right results, not by speed.
Six Number kid events
1. Numbers and comparing. Write three numbers to a hundred as someone says them. Order them from smallest and write with the crocodile: 34 < 56 < 71.
2. Adding and subtracting. Two questions to 20 with crossing (8 + 7, 15 − 9) and two to 100 (36 + 47, 82 − 35). With the method on paper!
3. Splits and numbers. Fill in: 14 = 9 + ?. Take 68 apart into tens and ones. Decide if 47 is even or odd.
4. Clocks. Set or draw: half past eight and quarter past four. Say how many minutes a quarter of an hour is.
5. Money and measuring. Make 67 Kč from coins. Count the change from 50 Kč at a price of 34 Kč. Measure a pencil in centimetres.
6. A word problem. Solve in three steps: “There are 28 children in the class. 13 went on a trip. How many children stayed?” Writing, question, answer in a sentence.
After each event, draw a star when you finish it. Six stars = the Number kid title. Where a star is missing, go back to the lesson — you will find the lesson numbers in the level overview.
Sample solution for event 2: 36 + 47
Tens: 30 + 40 = 70.
Ones: 6 + 7 = 13. Spilled over — watch the new ten.
I put together: 70 + 13 = 83.
36 + 47 = 83.
Check the other way: 83 − 47? 83 − 40 = 43, 43 − 3 = 40, 40 − 4 = 36. I got back to the start. It matches.
Sample solution for event 6: a word problem
“There are 28 children in the class. 13 went on a trip. How many stayed?”
Writing: there were 28, 13 left, they ask for the rest.
Question: 28 − 13. In parts: 28 − 10 = 18, 18 − 3 = 15.
Answer in a sentence: 15 children stayed in the class.
Check: 15 + 13 = 28. It matches. Three steps, the star is home.
Sample solution for event 5: change from 50 Kč
Price 34 Kč, paid 50 Kč.
I fill up: 34… and 6 is 40. And 10 is 50.
I give back 6 + 10 = 16 Kč.
Check: 34 + 16 = 50. Tens 40, ones 10, together 50. It matches.
With which coins? A 10 Kč, a 5 Kč and a 1 Kč: 10 + 5 + 1 = 16.
Do not skip events that you find hard. Those are exactly why the finale exists. A weak spot found today is a gift — you know exactly what to go over before the next level starts.
