A calculator is a saw, not a hand
A saw cuts a plank faster than a hand. Does that mean you should wipe the board and comb your hair with a saw? No. A tool is great at its job and clumsy at everything else.
A calculator is a tool for counting big, boring numbers. For that it is honest and fast. But when you use it for 7 + 5, your counting muscle stays on the sofa. And a muscle that does not train gets weak.
There is one more thing people talk about too little: a calculator obeys blindly. It counts exactly what you tap — even if you tap nonsense. It does not raise an eyebrow, it does not ask “do you mean that?”. It just spits out a number.
So today two skills at once: decide when to take the calculator and when not. And never trust it blindly — always have a rough idea in your head of what should come out.
Adam pulls out a phone with a calculator for everything. Even for 9 + 6. “Why would I work when a machine can do it?” Then he goes on a class trip, the phone has to stay in the backpack — and at the stall he does not know if they gave him the right change.
Ema next to him says calmly: “Ice cream for 35, you gave 50, you should get 15 back. That matches.” Adam goes red. He is not less clever than Ema. He just lent his counting muscle to a machine and the muscle moved out. From that trip he counts change in his head — and saves the phone for photos.
Make a rule with yourself and write it above the desk: head and paper first, calculator only for a check or for huge numbers. One rule, no exceptions in the middle of a test.
When yes, when no — and how not to trust it blindly
Calculator yes: when the numbers are big and boring (1 847 + 3 926), when you check a result you already counted yourself, and when in a real project you need lots of calculations fast — for example you add spending for a whole month.
Calculator no: when you are learning a new method (that is like letting a robot do press-ups for you), when the numbers are small (up to a hundred belongs to the head and paper) and when it is banned — in a test the sofa-muscle will not help you.
And now the most important bit: how to work with it when you do take it. Always in three steps. First an estimate — round the numbers and count roughly what should come out. Then tap. At the end compare: does the result match the estimate? When the estimate and the calculator are far apart, one of you two made a mistake. And because the calculator counts without mistakes, the mistake will be in the fingers — a tap typo.
A tap typo is the most common calculator accident: an extra digit, swapped order, the wrong sign. An estimate is the only net that catches you.
Example 1: big numbers with an estimate
Add 1 847 + 3 926. This is honest work for a calculator — but first an estimate.
Round: 1 847 is almost 1 800, 3 926 is almost 3 900. Estimate: 1 800 + 3 900 = 5 700. I expect something around five and three quarter thousand.
Now the calculator: 1 847 + 3 926 = 5 773.
Compare: 5 773 is close to the estimate 5 700. It matches. I can trust the result — and the whole check took ten seconds.
Example 2: an estimate catches a tap typo
Tereza wants to count 25 × 4 and on the calculator she gets 1 100. Hmm.
Estimate from the head: 25 × 4 is four twenty-fives. 25 + 25 = 50 and another 50, together 100. It should be around a hundred — and the calculator claims over a thousand. Eleven times more!
Tereza looks at the display: she tapped 25 × 44. The finger lingered on the four. The calculator counted 25 × 44 = 1 100 perfectly right — it just got the wrong question.
Without an estimate she would happily copy 1 100. With an estimate she caught the mistake in three seconds.
A calculator never knows that you typed the wrong numbers. It answers exactly and sure of itself even to a tap typo. Do not trust a result without your own estimate — the machine’s confidence is not correctness.

On paper: decide and test
Today you train deciding. Paper, pencil — and keep the calculator with you, but reach for it only when it passes the rule.

Write three questions: 8 + 7, then 56 + 38, then 12 487 + 9 365. For each one decide and write: head, paper, or calculator? Why?

Count 12 487 + 9 365 first by estimate (round to thousands), then with a calculator. Write both numbers next to each other and check they are close.

Try a tap typo on purpose: enter 56 + 380 on the calculator instead of 56 + 38. Write how an estimate would have saved you from that result.
