A different menu. The same rules. Not two files.
School sometimes opens PowerPoint. At home you have Slides. The rules stay: a sentence, layout, big type, contrast, a file name, sharing carefully.
What changes are button names and where the file lives.
Today you make a map: where a new slide is, layout, font, background, save, notes. You will not learn effects that only one program has.
If you start the work in Slides, do not duplicate it in the evening into PowerPoint “just in case”. In the morning you do not know which version counts.
Example: Tereza had two files, a different title in each. At the board they opened the older one. Jonáš stayed in one program and at school only showed he can do New slide.
One file. One program. Until the teacher says otherwise. Today you write six buttons on paper and find them in both menus. Effects that only one program can do do not belong at school.
Tereza started in Slides. Dad opened PowerPoint in the evening and “moved” the slides. In the morning she had two files, a different title in each. At the board they opened the older one.
Jonáš stayed in Slides, because the teacher wanted a link. At school in PowerPoint he only showed he can do New slide and Layout. He did not want a second truth.
Tereza learned that a bridge between programs is not two live versions. Today you feel PowerPoint so it does not surprise you at school. And you decide where the truth lives.
Before you click at school, ask: do we hand in a Slides link, a pptx file, or a PDF? One answer. Pick the program from that.
A map of buttons, one truth
PowerPoint: Home bar (font, new slide, layout), Design (background), Insert (picture), View (notes), Slide Show (from beginning). File → Save as.
Slides: at the top File, Slide, Insert, Share, all in the browser, saves to Drive.
Ctrl+M new slide often works in both. Present (F5) in both too.
The difference that hurts: PowerPoint may not save on its own when the power drops. Ctrl+S often. Slides wants a network.
Course rule: do not argue which is “better”. Deal with which the teacher wants, and keep readability. Effects that only one program can do do not belong at school. A sentence does. A sentence can do both.
How you check: six buttons on paper. In both programs point with a finger at new slide, layout, font, background, save, notes. If you do not know where the file lives — Drive, OneDrive, a folder — you are not done. Find out with a parent before you start decorating.
Jonáš at school: PowerPoint, Home → New slide, Layout Title and Content, type 40/28, Design light, Ctrl+S to OneDrive, name Subject-practice-Jonas.
Tereza at home the same in Slides. Both pass Prep.
Wrong: Tereza emails a pptx and a Slides link and different text in each. The teacher marks one, she speaks from the other.
Even alone you can be a team of one file. It sounds silly until at the board you open the older shadow.
Do not download illegal PowerPoint or a “free converter” from an advert. School has a licence, or Slides is enough. An unknown converter can eat the file and the account.
Four things you will build in this course
The course has four small projects. You do not have to do them all at once. Today you add only this:
🎯 A hobby in 5 slides
Five slides about something you like doing. One sentence about what it is. No paragraphs from your notebook.
Hobby: ask whether a link is enough, so you do not carry two versions.
📚 A report
Eight slides for school: a start, three proofs, an end. The title on every slide is a sentence, not “Slide 3”.
Report: the teacher says the format. You keep it.
📊 Survey results
A chart from a table (not a screenshot from chat) and under it where the numbers come from.
Survey: a chart from a table both can do. A screenshot from chat both can do too — still wrong.
⚖️ A defence
You say one sentence, show proof, answer “and what if…”. If you do not know, you say I don’t know.
Defence: one live truth. A PDF backup only when the teacher wants it.
Find the same thing in a different menu
If you do not have PowerPoint, go through the map on paper and in Slides show the same steps. The goal is a dictionary of buttons, not a new decoration.
-
Open PowerPoint, or in Slides File and Slide next to paper. On paper write six things: new slide, layout, font, background, save, notes. Skip effects.
-
In PowerPoint almost the same as in Slides: Home → New slide (or Ctrl+M). Home → Layout → Title and Content. Write a sentence size 40. Say both paths out loud, so in your head they are addresses, not magic.
-
Design or Format background: light solid. Type dark. Ctrl+S. In Slides only check the name at the top. Say where the file lives: Drive, OneDrive, a folder. If you do not know, find out with a parent.
-
View → Notes, write one hint. Present (F5), check the hint is not on the wall. Esc. The program changed. The rule did not.
-
Do not export a second copy “just in case” into the other program now. Safety is one file and knowing the path. Close. Open again from that place. If an old version from USB opens and a new one from the cloud, wipe the mess with a parent.
A dictionary of buttons
Without a dictionary you panic at school. With a dictionary you look for a tab, not a miracle.
-
On paper: what new slide and layout are called in Slides and in PowerPoint.
-
Ask a teacher or a parent which hand-in format counts in your subject.
-
Find where PowerPoint saves. Say the path out loud.
Now you 💪
- In both worlds I can add a slide, a layout and big type.
- I know which one file is the truth, and I do not keep two live versions.
- I did not install a shady program from an advert because of a presentation.
Done when: You have a map of PowerPoint and Slides buttons and one file as the truth.
What to take from this lesson
- A different menu, the same rules.
- Ctrl+M, Present, big type, contrast — both.
- PowerPoint: Ctrl+S. Slides: a network and Drive.
- One live version, not moving it every evening.
- The teacher decides the hand-in format, not a mood.
- Names in the examples (Tereza, Jonáš) are made up. Do not put your number, email or photo on a slide.
