A VPN is not invisibility
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) makes a tunnel between your phone and a VPN server. The internet provider on public Wi-Fi does not see what exactly you do — they only see that you are connected to a VPN. Pages still see that you are on a website. Sekolah still sees what you do on the school network.
A VPN sometimes helps:
- on public Wi-Fi in a café (less risk that someone is listening)
- when a parent or school recommends a specific VPN
A VPN does not help:
- against viruses and scams in email
- against cyberbullying
- “hiding” from parental controls
- going around a school filter (school often sees it anyway)
A free VPN that promises “full invisibility” often collects your data itself. A parent picks a VPN, not an ad in a game. A trusted VPN from a parent or school is better than “best free VPN” from an ad.
When VPN yes
- A parent said: on public Wi-Fi switch on our VPN.
- You travel and connect to an unknown network in a hotel.
- Sekolah recommended a VPN for homework from a public library.
When VPN no
- “So nobody can see me on Instagram.” — Instagram still sees you.
- “So I can go around a ban on games at night.” — that is going around rules, not safety.
- When an ad in a game offers a VPN for free — you often pay with data.

Ask a parent: Do we have a VPN? When should I switch it on?

If yes: Settings → VPN (iPhone) or Settings → Network → VPN (Android). Switch it on only when a parent said so.

Into the phone audit: VPN — we have / we do not. When to switch on: [a sentence from a parent].
What to say at home
To a parent:
“In the course we talked about VPN. I want to know if we have one and when to switch it on. I do not want to download anything from an ad in a game.”
Into family rules: A VPN only the one we agree. Not from an ad in an app.
A VPN is not a how-to for going around parents, school or the law. If the rules say “phone away at 21:00”, a VPN does not change that.

Ask a parent about a VPN. Write the answer into the audit: we have / we do not, when to switch on.
If you do not have a VPN, it is enough to know why — for example “at home we have safe Wi-Fi, at school a filter, on public Wi-Fi we do not connect without a parent.”
Check: You know what a VPN is and what it is not. A parent said whether you have a VPN and when to switch it on. You do not need to download a VPN from an ad.
What to take from this lesson
- VPN = a tunnel. Not invisibility.
- It helps on public Wi-Fi when a parent recommends it.
- It does not help against scams, bullying, going around rules.
