When everything is bold and big, nothing is important.
Bullets already have a ceiling. Today you teach eyes where first. First the title-sentence. Then one strong anchor. Then the rest quieter.
When everything is size 40 and bold, the back row does not know where to start. That is noise. You quiet noise with an order of sizes, not another colour. Colour only at Illustrator. Now size and bold.
The back row makes one main strip on a slide. That strip is the title. Bullets are smaller. A number, when it is proof, may be almost as big as the title. Two equally shouting strips fight over eyes.
One hierarchy per slide. You set: title 40 bold, bullets 28 regular, maybe one number 36. You turn off bold on all bullets. In Slides you select text and at the top set size. A parent or the school holds the account. No child’s email. When sizes sit, colour can wait. If you add colour now, you mix up importance with a rainbow.
Sofie put everything bold, three colours, the same size. From the back a poster with no direction. The teacher asked what is main. Sofie pointed at the whole slide. The whole slide is not an answer. Filip left bold only the title, bullets calm, the number 12 km big. Eyes went title → number → anchors. With no new colour. After the fix Sofie turned off bold on bullets and WordArt. From the door the teacher hit the sentence first. That is what she wanted. She needed sizes for that, not another colour. Dad held the account. She did not sign in with email herself. After school they showed it from the door.
One bold on a slide: the title. A second only when a number is proof. A third bold is noise. Turn noise off with Ctrl+B where it should not be.
A big title, smaller bullets, maybe a number
Order of eyes: 1 title, 2 main proof (a number or the first bullet), 3 the rest. Size and bold build this order. Colour not yet, so you do not mix contrast from 준비.
Select the title, 40, bold. Select bullets, 28, not bold, not italic. Select a figure, 36, bold, if it is proof. Format → Clear formatting on text from the web, then again.
The eye is lazy. It goes to the biggest and boldest. When that is everything, the eye wanders. Wandering is boredom. Hierarchy is kindness. It is not art. It is craft of sizes.
A mistake is shadow, type outline and WordArt. Those shout all. Turn off type effects. Canva does not belong here. Red on a whole paragraph “so it is important” is an alarm. The class turns an alarm off. A solid background. Type almost black or white. An accent one colour on a figure. One theme. A solid background. Type almost black or white. An accent one colour on a figure. One theme for the whole piece of work. One number, or nothing. On the second slide set the same 40/28 by hand, so eyes learn where to look.
Wrong: each bullet a different size by mood, the title smaller than the body. The body eats the title. The class reads anchors and misses the main sentence. That is reverse hierarchy. You fix it with sizes, not with new text.
Right: Filip 40 / 28 / 12 km as 36. Sofie after the fix turned off bold on bullets. Present (F5). Eye on the sentence. Then 12. Then anchors. The teacher from the window hit what the slide is about. Hierarchy worked in silence.
An example from a survey: the number 8 votes may shout. The sentence under it “why apple” is smaller. The comment “it was funny” is not bold.
Do not shout red on a whole paragraph so it is important. Red on everything is not importance. It is an alarm. One number, or nothing. The title is black or white according to the mode from 준비.
Four things you will build in this course
The course has four small projects. You do not have to do them all at once. Today you add only this:
🎯 A hobby in 5 slides
Five slides about something you like doing. One sentence about what it is. No paragraphs from your notebook.
Hobby: the scene name is big, a list of things smaller.
📚 A report
Eight slides for school: a start, three proofs, an end. The title on every slide is a sentence, not “Slide 3”.
Report: the sentence about what this is about is the biggest on every slide.
📊 Survey results
A chart from a table (not a screenshot from chat) and under it where the numbers come from.
Survey: a number may shout, a comment may not.
⚖️ A defence
You say one sentence, show proof, answer “and what if…”. If you do not know, you say I don’t know.
Defence: the claim biggest, the objection smaller.
Set sizes 40 and 28
One slide. Sizes 40 / 28. Bold only the title and maybe a figure. Present from the door: eye on the sentence.
-
Open a slide with bullets. Select the title. Type 40, Ctrl+B on. Check contrast. The title must be readable from the door. Three metres. It holds from 준비.
-
Select all bullets. Size 28. Turn Ctrl+B off if it is on. Turn italic off. Turn type effects off. Format → Clear formatting if a foreign style stayed, and set 28 again. Bullets go quiet. On purpose.
-
If you have a figure, select it, 36, bold, one emphasis is enough. No figure? You bold nothing else. In PowerPoint almost the same: Home, size and bold. Present (F5), step back. Where does the eye land? Not on the sentence? Make the title bigger or quiet the body. Not the other way round.
-
Set the same hierarchy on the next slide: do not draw by eye. 40/28 by hand again. Two slides. The same title at the top. The class learns where to look. At the top.
-
On paper: title 40, bullets 28, figure 36. Paper by the monitor next to 5×7. The workshop ends when Present (F5) from the door hits the sentence first. Not a bullet. A bullet is second. Order of eyes. Done.
Noise of bold
Go through slides and turn off every bold that is not a title or a figure-proof.
-
Turn off bold on bullets.
-
Check the title is bigger than the body.
-
Present (F5) from the door: say where the eye landed first. It must on the sentence.
Now you 💪
- The title is the biggest and bold.
- Bullets are smaller and without pointless bold.
- On the slide not everything shouts the same.
Done when: The eye from the door goes first to the sentence. Bullets are smaller, not second titles.
What to take from this lesson
- Hierarchy = an order of eyes by size and bold.
- One main strip on a slide: the title.
- Everything bold = noise.
- A number-proof may shout. A comment may not.
- Not WordArt and shadows. Those shout all.
- 이름s in the examples (Sofie, Filip) are made up. Do not put your number, email or photo on a slide.
