A phone is not a vault
A phone ends in the toilet, on a tram, in a reset, under a car. If only photos from a trip and yesterday’s homework live on it, they are gone. Not because you are stupid. Because a pocket is not a vault.
Two copies:
- المدرسة work on Drive (school or family, which a parent watches).
- Photos in a backup a parent switched on (iCloud, Drive, Google Photos) — not a public album, not “an album for friends”, not a classmate’s USB.
A backup is not “send everything to a friend on a stick”. A friend loses the stick. A friend shows photos on. A vault is an account an adult watches.
One copy in the phone is a wish. Two copies are a plan. Three you almost do not need, when those two actually exist and you see them once in a while.
Homework handed in only in an app that “holds it in the cloud itself”, check the same. Open Drive in a browser. Do you see the file? Is the date today? If not, save it on purpose yourself. Automatic promises are comfortable. Your tap is surer.
Once a month: open Drive from another device and check that the notebook / homework is there. A backup nobody checked is a wish. When you see it in a browser on a parent’s computer, it exists. When you see it only in an app that “says it syncs”, still check.
What to back up (and what not)
Yes:
- school homework, presentations, photos of the board you need to hand in
- photos from a trip you want in a year
- contacts the phone watches itself, when a backup is on with a parent
Not as a public backup:
- photos that would not hang on the board by the headteacher — better not to have those even in the phone
- passwords, 2FA codes, photos of scraps
- someone else’s homework of the whole class “just in case”
المدرسة Drive has school rules. Do not stick family photos from the bathroom there. Do not stick family Drive into a school presentation with a link “anyone with the link”. A link “anyone” is a megaphone. A link “only me and mum” is enough.
Where it is switched on
A parent switches it on. You show what should vanish from “only in the phone”. The password to iCloud / Google does not belong on a scrap at school.

iPhone: Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup. On? If not, a parent switches it on on Wi-Fi, not on data in the metro without asking. Photos: iCloud Photos in the same place. المدرسة files: the Drive app / school files — save to Drive, not only into downloads.
Android: Settings → Google → Backup (sometimes System → Backup). Google Photos: the Photos app → profile → Backup settings. A school file: Drive → the upload arrow. A file that lives only in Downloads vanishes with the phone.

Find one school file that is now only in the phone. Upload it to Drive. Open it on another device. Once you see it there, it exists.

Ask: is the backup private? A parent’s family account yes. A shared album with the whole class no. A “public link” on homework with your name no.
If school forbids a personal cloud, use school Drive. Ask a teacher. Do not go around the ban by sending a notebook to Discord “so I have it”.
Photos in Google Photos / iCloud can be private. A shared link “anyone on the internet” is the board by the headteacher again, only worse — the office school can see, the link anyone with a copy can see. Before you send an album to grandma, check it is specific people, not the world.
If the backup argues there is little space, with a parent you delete duplicates and videos from a pocket. Not the school folder. Not the only copy of homework. Space is dealt with by tidying, not by switching the backup off “so it stops reporting”.
What to say at home
To a parent:
“I have homework only in the phone. If I lose it, I am in trouble. Can we put it on Drive you watch? And once a month we open it from the computer, so we know it is there.”
To a sibling who photographs everything:
“Photos from a trip belong in a backup mum has. Not into a chat with ten people. Chat is not Drive. Chat gets mixed up and someone sends it on.”
To yourself before handing in:
“Is it on Drive? Did I open it from another place? If not, it is not handed in safely yet. Only in a pocket.”
If a parent says “you have a USB anyway”, answer: a USB gets lost the same as a phone. Drive you can open from a computer is a second copy.
A backup into someone else’s phone “for the night” is not a backup. It is a copy with a person you may not like tomorrow. A family cloud. المدرسة Drive. Not a classmate. Not a public gallery.
Audit and rules
Into the phone audit write: iCloud / Google backup on yes/no — who watches the account — one file checked from another device. Into family rules: المدرسة work and photos have a second copy. Not with a friend. Once a month we open it elsewhere.
If the phone refuses a backup because it is full, things are deleted with a parent. Not the whole school folder blind.
Now you 💪
One school file that now lives only in the phone, put on Drive. Once the phone is gone, that file is not.
Then open that file on a computer or in a browser. If it opens, tick the audit. If it does not open, it is not a backup yet. It is hope. Fix it now, not after the tram.
Check: You know where the second copy is. It is not “in a pocket”. It is not with a friend. Once you check it from another device.
