A photo you cannot take back

A screenshot lives on. Do not send what you would not put on the board at school.

The board rule

If it hung by the headteacher’s office, would you send it? No → do not send. Not even “just to them”. Not even “they will delete it”. Not even “it is only a story for 24 hours”. A screenshot is a second. Gone from chat ≠ gone from the world.

The board by the headteacher is a one-second test. You do not have to think for an hour. You do not have to know the law. The picture is enough: it hangs at school, a teacher sees it, a classmate sees it, someone you do not like sees it. Would you still send it? If not, do not send.

That holds for:

It holds even if the other side promises nobody will see it. Anyone can promise. A screenshot does not need permission.

⚠️

If someone asks you for a photo that would not go on the board, that is stop. Say no. Tell an adult. It is not a “friendship test”. It is not “if you like me”. Friendship that wants a photo from the bathroom is not friendship. You can hang up. You can block. You do not have to explain twenty sentences.

What happens after sending

Chat shows “delivered”. For you that ends it. For the photo it does not. The other side has it in the phone. They can save it. They can show it next to them. They can throw it into another group in a month, when you fall out.

“Delete it” is not magic. You can delete it with yourself. Not all copies. That is why you decide before sending. Not after.

A story, reels, a status — the timer lies. The timer deletes with you. Not in heads and not in a screenshot.

A voice note and a video hold the same. The board does not ask if it was 3 seconds or 3 minutes.

What else to consider, even if it “is not boring”

Some photos might go on the headteacher’s board. Still consider:

When you photograph a group, ask. May I put this in the class chat? One sentence is enough. If someone says no, do not cut them out of the photo in an ugly way on purpose. Either do not post the photo, or cover the face and ask again.

The phone: before you press send

A photo often has the place it was made inside it. Some networks can add that as a map. Some take it from the phone.

  1. iPhone: Settings → الخصوصية & Security → Location Services → Camera. If you do not want a place in photos, switch it off. On a specific network: Settings → [app] → Location → Never or While Using. In the app switch off “add a place” on a post, if it is there.

Android: Settings → Apps → Camera / Gallery → Permissions → Location. On a network the same: Apps → [network] → Permissions → Location. When sharing, check whether a map is not attaching.

  2. Before you send, look at the photo in full screen. Is there an entrance, a name tag on a door, a timetable with a class, a kit with a surname?

  3. If it is a sibling or a classmate, ask before sending. Not after. Not “I already posted it, does it bother you?”

What to say when someone wants it from you

To a friend:

“No. I would not put this on the board by the headteacher. إرسال a meme that is not from the bathroom instead.”

Someone pushes a second time:

“I said no. If you ask again, I will show mum / a teacher. It is not a joke.”

To a parent, when they put you on their profile:

“Can I ask you to show me first? Some photos I do not want on the internet. It is not that I am ashamed of you. I want to know what hangs about me.”

To a sibling you photographed:

“May I send this photo to grandma in the family chat? If not, I will delete it.”

If it is awkward to say out loud, write it. One sentence is enough. You do not have to write an essay.

💡

The rule holds the other way too. You do not want someone photographing you in the changing room. Do not photograph others in the changing room either. Not “for the team”. Not to a coach in chat, when they do not know. Permission is a sentence before pressing, not an apology afterwards.

Family rules

This task belongs to family rules. One sentence on the fridge. It holds for children and for parents with photos of children.

A draft sentence:

We do not send a photo that would not hang on the board by the headteacher. We photograph strangers only with permission. Parents ask before they put a child on their profile.

Read it out loud. If you want it shorter: The board by the headteacher = the test.

Into the phone audit you can add: location on the camera off yes/no.

Now you 💪

Write the board rule into family rules in one sentence. Read it. It holds for parents with your photos too — they can ask you before they put you on their profile.

Say that sentence to a sibling or a parent. Even if you send nothing today. A rule is practised in calm, not only in the bath.

Check: You have one sentence you decide by in a second. You know a screenshot lives. You can say no without apologising twenty sentences.
