Google has a memory
A teacher, a coach, later a part-time job — someone types your name. A nickname, an old comment, a photo from camp comes up. You do not have to be famous. A public account and a real surname are enough.
The internet forgets slowly. A friend forgets a joke in a week. A search engine can hold it for years. That is why you treat a name like a kit now: you do not leave it lying everywhere.
That is not: “you must not exist”. That is: a real surname and school do not belong in a nick. A nickname can be funny. An ID card into a nick no.
So:
- a game nick without a surname and a year of birth (
kuba2014is an invite to age and to a name) - school email not as a sign-up for every game and every poll
- a comment you would not read to grandma, do not send — especially under your own name
- a photo from camp with the caption “5.B Primary المدرسة…” is a map to you
A nickname bluedragon says less than novak_kuba_zs. Less is enough. Friends will know you when you write to them.
With a parent, once a year type your name into search. If something awkward comes up, you go to a teacher / a network admin, not into panic. Lots of things could be deleted. Some could not — that is why care now. Do not delete someone else’s things “as a punishment”. You deal with your name, your photos, your accounts.
Where a name sticks
It is not only Google. It is also:
- a nick in a game the whole server sees
- an email
firstname.surname@…saved with a game that then leaks - a comment under a video where you have a profile with a photo from school
- a discussion forum that lives ten years
- school newspapers online, a club site, a results list with a name and a photo
Some things are fine. A club publishes race results. A teacher approves a school photo from a trip. You watch what you put yourself.
When you make an account: ask if it wants a real name. A game almost never. المدرسة yes. A parent’s shop yes. The difference is who watches that account.
A tournament that wants an ID card in a nick “so it is visible who won” may want a name with the organiser. Not with the whole server. Ask a coach. A public ladder with a surname and a photo from school is a megaphone again. You may be on the team sheet. You do not have to be in a meme caption.
An old account you no longer use still lives. With a parent delete it or switch it off, if it is possible. A forgotten profile with a real name is like a forgotten kit on the pitch. Whoever walks past reads it.
How to check it on the phone
We are not looking for how to “google someone to the bottom”. We are looking for you, with a parent, in calm.
-
Open games and networks you use. For each: profile settings → nickname / name. Is there a surname, school, a year, a class? Rename one if yes.
-
iPhone: Settings → [your name] shows Apple ID. A parent watches that. In apps: profile → Edit. Switch off public display of email, if it is possible.
Android: Play Games / a profile in the app → Edit profile. A parent watches the Google account: Settings → Google → Manage your Google الحساب → Personal info. Do not touch school Workspace without a teacher.
-
With a parent: browser → search your name in quotes. Look together. Do not click weird links. If a school page comes up, fine. If an old meme with your name comes up, write down where and ask a teacher / an admin, not a friend “delete it or…”.
Renaming a nick in a game sometimes cannot be تم immediately. Then at least clean the bio and make the profile private, as you can from the Shadow chapter. A safer profile and reputation go together.
What to say at home
To a parent:
“Can we type my name into search for five minutes? I want to know what hangs about me. If there is something silly, I do not want to shout. I want to know who to go to.”
To a sibling with the nick anicka2013school:
“A year and school in a nick says age and place. We will pick another nick. Friends from the party will know you. A stranger server does not have to.”
To yourself before a comment:
“Would I read this to grandma? To a teacher in five years? If not, I do not send.”
If a parent says “nobody looks that up anyway”, answer calmly: a part-time job and a coach sometimes do. Once a year is enough.
We do not target classmates. We do not look for their address, family, old accounts. “Find everything about them” is not safety. It is interfering. If you see someone else has school in a nick, tell them between four eyes. Do not write it under their photo.
Safer profile
Into the project safer profile nicks belong too. Not only Instagram. A game, Discord, email into games.
Write:
- a nick without a surname and a year: yes/no
- school mail only into school: yes/no
- once a year search the name with a parent: date
If something hangs and cannot be deleted, it is not the end of the world. An adult writes to an admin. You do not leave it rotting from shame. Shame is a bad adviser. Paper and a parent are better.
Now you 💪
Check nicks in games: is there a surname, school, a year? Rename one if yes.
If you cannot rename, clean the bio and write into the audit: old nick — we watch, we do not make a new account without a parent. Another account “just because of a nick” often means another door. Fewer accounts is less work.
Broadcaster تم. You know what not to send, what to report and how to be named. The board rule, three steps with bullying, a nick without an ID card. Guard will switch on a second gate.
What to take from this lesson
- A nick without a surname, school and a year of birth.
- A public comment is for a long time. Grandma as a test.
- Once in a while search yourself with a parent. No panic. No hunt on others.
- المدرسة email is not a sign-up for every game.
