Google account and Drive

Where the spreadsheet lives, and how you find it on Drive.

Drive is a wardrobe, not the desktop

The workbook from last time does not sit in the browser like a picture. It sits on Google Drive — in the cloud of the account you are signed into. When you close the tab and tomorrow open drive.google.com, the workbook is there.

The computer desktop is a different wardrobe. A file on the desktop is seen only by that computer. You can see Drive from anywhere, when you know the account password.

💡

Sheets vs Excel. We work in Google Sheets in the browser. Desktop Excel saves .xlsx into a folder. Both can do a spreadsheet. We watch Drive — Excel watches a folder on the disk. When a teacher says “open the spreadsheet”, they usually mean a workbook on Drive or a link from Share.

How you get there

Three paths. All lead to the same workbook, when you are in the same account.

  1. Open drive.google.com. تسجيل الدخول if it asks. Top right the circle must show your email (not “guest”).

  2. In the search at the top type Tables with Martin. Enter. A green spreadsheet icon should show up.

  3. Click the workbook. It opens in Sheets. At the bottom tabs Grades and ملاحظةs. Top left the same name.

Second path: in the browser type sheets.google.com. You will see a list of recent workbooks. Tables with Martin is often at the top.

Third path: a tab you left open. It works until you sign out or change account.

⚠️

المدرسة computer. When you sign in with a classmate’s account “just for a moment”, you save the workbook to their Drive. At home you will not see it. Before you open Sheets, always look at the circle top right.

What Drive is and what Sheets is

In Explorer on Windows you may see a “Google Drive” folder. That is a mirror of the cloud. You do not have to install it now. The browser is enough.

A folder, so it is not a pile

When you have ten workbooks, without a folder you find them only by searching. A parent or a teacher can make a folder المدرسة or Spreadsheets on Drive.

  1. On drive.google.com click NewFolder.

  2. A name, for example Tables with Martin. Enter.

  3. Find the workbook Tables with Martin. Right-click → Move to → pick the new folder.

  4. Open the folder. Inside is the workbook. Double-click — Sheets.

The workbook did not rename. It only changed its address on Drive. Like when you move a notebook from a bag to a shelf.

🏫 Grade average One sheet, two columns: subject and grade. At the bottom a sum and an average.
💰 Pocket money Rows = days, columns = income / spend / left.
📊 Class survey One question, answers in one column, later a chart.
🏆 Mini dashboard Three numbers at the top and one chart. Numbers as a link, not copied by hand.

Now you 💪

Without a parent these checks are enough. If you get lost, call an adult — let them look at the account.

  1. The circle top right shows your email (not someone else’s).
  2. On Drive you find Tables with Martin by searching in ten seconds.
  3. After opening the workbook you see sheets Grades and ملاحظةs at the bottom.
  4. At the top Saved to Drive lights up (or a moment of “Saving…” and then saved).
  5. Optional: the workbook sits in a folder you know.

If the workbook is not on Drive, you opened another account. تسجيل الخروج, sign in to the right one, search again. If it is really missing, make a new workbook and name it the same — but you lose the old cells. That is why you watch the account.

Check: You know the spreadsheet lives on Drive, not “in the browser”. You can find it via drive.google.com or sheets.google.com. The same account at home and at school.
