Parental watch and time

A chatbot is not a night friend. Time, the screen and history belong to an agreement.

An agreement about time is part of the tool

Being able to ask does not mean hanging in the window until midnight. A chatbot can be sticky: always one more question, one more explanation, one more joke. That is not learning. That is an endless machine. Parental watch here is not a punishment. It is a rail, so you still have a head for school, sleep and people in the room. Chat history, time limits, a shared place at the table — those are levers. You do not set “parent mode” in secret against parents. You set it together. When you dodge limits with another account, you go back to the lesson about the key. When you keep the time, you have more energy for an honest question. A short focused chat beats an hour of wandering.

Adam practises “just for a moment” after dinner. Ema sees it is eleven. Adam says he is still studying for a test. In the chat there are jokes and a third round of stories. Mum closes the laptop. In the morning they have ten minutes at the table: three questions from the textbook, no joke. Adam remembers more. It is not because mum is mean. It is because tiredness turns the chat into television. Ema suggests a card for the fridge: days when it is allowed, how many minutes, where we sit, that a phone with a chatbot does not sleep under the pillow. Adam signs. It is not a contract with a company. It is a home rule.

💡

A timer on a kitchen minute clock is better than “just a bit more” in your head. When it rings, even a good question ends. Tomorrow is a day too.

Four levers: place, time, history, sleep

Place: a shared table beats hiding under the duvet. You see you write politely. A parent sees you are not on a strange page. Time: in advance. Not “when you are 完了”. Nobody is 完了 with a chat. History: a parent may look. That also protects you from putting a row into a prompt. Sleep: a chatbot after dark often steals attention. Learning belongs in the light. When school sets evening homework, a short block and a check in a book still apply, not a marathon. Watch is not reading every sentence of yours out loud. It is knowing the tool is shared and you are not a night shift on the model’s hotline.

A card draft. Rewrite the numbers your way.

  1. Where: the kitchen table, not the bed.
  2. When: for example Tuesday and Thursday 20 minutes after a snack. Not after 20:00, unless you agree otherwise.
  3. Timer: 20 minutes. It rings → save the question on paper, close.
  4. History: a parent may open it. We write as if a teacher could see it.
  5. Exception: a school project with a teacher has a different time — it is said in advance, it is not hidden.

If there is no card, you invent it today. If a parent does not want AI at all, the course goes to paper and questions to the teacher. That is not failing. It is a family decision.

⚠️

Dodging a limit with another phone or a classmate’s account is cheating the agreement. As serious as under the desk.

Why this right now

You are in the course Ask with Martin, level 準備. You work in a chatbot (ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude) — same game, different brand. No code. A parent or the school creates the account. A child’s email does not belong here.

This is not the インベンター level. There you build a chatbot on your own website. Here you are a user: a question, a check, a citation.

You will know this lesson by one sentence: A short agreed time at the table beats a night endless chat. When you can say it to a parent or a teacher, you have got the core. The rest is practice, not magic.

Tomorrow is the 準備 finale: the first polite question. Without a limit the finale would be another half hour of wandering. With a limit it is a craft. Watch and time are part of literacy, not an add-on for small kids.

Four things you will build in this course

The course has four small projects. You do not have to do them all at once. Today you add only what this lesson can do.

🏫 A report with citations

An outline, three sources that exist, and a sentence in your own words. AI must not be the only author.

A report is written in blocks with a timer, not at night before handing in with a chatbot until morning.

📝 Test training

Coach role: let it ask, do not let it say the answer. You count / answer yourself.

Test training: 15 minutes of questions, then close and sleep.

📅 Family planner

Tasks for the week (not passwords, not marks). A parent sees the plan, not your chat.

A planner has a line “AI time” too — so it does not eat the rest of the week.

📜 An AI code for the class

Seven short rules on a poster. No horror — a how-to.

クラスコード later: at school time is set by the lesson, not thirst for chat.

Workshop: a card for the fridge

With a parent you write five lines. Then one short block with a timer and one question. When it rings, you stop even if it is “interesting”.

  1. Take paper and a pencil. A parent at the table. Write where, which days, how many minutes, until what hour, that history is not secret. The numbers are yours, not a law from this page.

  2. Set a timer for the agreed time (even 10 minutes if it is late). Open a chatbot. One polite question about schoolwork. No jokes “one more round”.

  3. When the timer rings, leave the question unfinished if it is dumping. Write down what you want tomorrow. 閉じる the window. Physically away from the chair if it is hard.

  4. Tell a parent if the agreement makes sense, or is too strict / too loose. Change one line. An agreement that hurts for no reason gets dodged anyway. It should sit.

  5. Stick the card or put it in the diary. Do not put a photo of the card into the chat — on the fridge is enough. In the course notebook write: time is part of the tool.

Practice: stickiness

Notice when you are no longer learning. Three signals. For each write what you will do.

  1. A third joke in a row, the textbook closed. A signal of what? What about the timer?

  2. It is after 21:00, “I will just check one more date”. What is better than another prompt?

  3. A classmate calls you to open their account, because at yours the limit is already on. Answer?

Now you 💪

Go through three checks. At each one tick in your head: can I see it, or not?

  1. There is a home card or at least five lines in the notebook with a parent.
  2. You can stop when the timer rings.
  3. You do not see watch as an enemy, but as a rail against the machine.

If something is missing, go back to the steps above. This is not a test for marks. It is a safety net, so you go on sure, not confused.

Check: You have an agreement about time and place and you really bounded one block with a timer.
