Reputation online for the long run

A nick, comments, old accounts. What hangs in five years.

Google has a memory

A teacher, a coach, a part-time job — someone types your name. A nickname, an old comment, a photo from camp comes up. The internet forgets slowly. That is why you treat a name like a kit: you do not leave it lying everywhere.

In the reputation lesson we said a nick without a surname. Here for the long run:

💡

With a parent, once a year type your name into search. If something awkward comes up, you go to a teacher / a network admin, not into panic. Lots of things could be deleted. Some could not — that is why care now.

What to do now

  1. A list of accounts you use. A game, a network, email into games. An old account with a real name? With a parent delete or switch off.

  2. On each active account: a nick without a surname, school, a year? A bio without an address? Fix one.

  3. With a parent: search the name in quotes. Look together. Do not click weird links. Write the date of the next check — in a year.

A forgotten profile with a real name is like a forgotten kit on the pitch. Whoever walks past reads it.

What to say at home

To a parent:

“Can we search my name for five minutes? I want to know what hangs. If there is something silly, I do not want to shout. I want to know who to go to.”

To yourself before a comment:

“Would I read this to a teacher in five years? If not, I do not send.”

Into the safer profile: A nick without an ID card — yes. Searching the name with a parent — date.

⚠️

We do not target classmates. We do not look for their address. If you see someone has school in a nick, tell them between four eyes. Do not write it under their photo.

Now you 💪

Check one old account. Delete, switch off, or write “we watch with a parent”.

With a parent, search the name — or write a date when you will do it. Into the safer profile.

Check: Old accounts checked. A nick without a surname. The date of a yearly name check.
