Paper and pencil always at hand

The head thinks, the paper remembers. How to set up a counting workspace and write a method you can read.

The brain is great at thinking and rubbish at holding numbers. Try to keep a middle result, a borrowed ten and the question in your head — something will slip. That is not your weakness. That is how the head is built in every person.

That is why pros count on paper. Programmers scribble diagrams, engineers count on the edges of drawings, mathematicians use mountains of paper. Paper is their second memory.

In this course the rule is: pencil in hand before you start counting. Not only when you get stuck — from the start.

Today you will set up a counting workspace and learn to write calculations so they can be read. Even in a week. Even if someone else reads them. That will help you with reading clues from the last lesson — an unreadable clue is no use.

Filip counts 38 + 47 in his head. “Eight and seven is fifteen… thirty and forty is… wait, what did I have for the ones?” He starts a third time. Meanwhile Sofie has written both numbers under each other, added them and already has 85.

“You are faster,” Filip wonders. “I am not,” says Sofie. “I just do not carry numbers in my head. Paper carries them for me.” Filip tries the same on paper — and suddenly he is 完了 in a moment, with no restarts. That “from the start again” feeling is gone.

Set up a maths nest: one notebook or a stack of paper, two sharpened pencils, a rubber for drawing. Everything in one place, so you never hunt. Hunting for a pencil can kill a whole practice.

How to write a calculation you can read

Paper helps only when you can find your way in it. A few rules take care of that.

Write big numbers. Tiny digits in the corner of the page are a factory for copying mistakes. Fine to have one digit per centimetre.

One step per line. Do not try to squeeze the whole calculation into one line. Each middle step gets its own line. When you look for a clue, you will find exactly the line where it broke.

Write the question too. 始める前に counting, copy the question. It sounds pointless — but digits often get lost while copying, and when you have the question on paper, you can match it with the textbook in one look.

Digits under each other. When you add and subtract in columns, ones must stand under ones and tens under tens. Crooked columns = mixed place values = nonsense.

Let crossings live. As you know from the last lesson: cross a wrong try thinly and count next to it. The page does not have to be pretty. It has to be readable.

Example 1: 38 + 47 in columns

Sofie’s writing. She writes 38 and under it 47, ones under ones.

Ones: 8 + 7 = 15. That is more than 9, so she writes 5 down and the one goes up above the tens — that is called a carry, a small one waits above the tens column.

Tens: 3 + 4 = 7, plus the carried 1, so 7 + 1 = 8. She writes 8.

Result: 85. The whole thing is two small sums instead of one big one. That is exactly why we count in columns: paper holds the place values, you always count only one-digit numbers.

Example 2: a shop with a middle result

Filip adds a shop: 24 + 18 + 36. He cannot hold three numbers in his head at once — and he does not have to.

He looks at what is friends: 24 and 36 make a round number together, because 4 + 6 = 10. He counts 24 + 36 = 60 and writes 60 on the paper. That lets it out of his head.

Now only 60 + 18: 60 + 10 = 70, 70 + 8 = 78. The shop costs 78 Kč.

That written middle result is the whole trick. The head always solves one small step, the paper watches the rest.

A calculation scribbled tiny in the corner of the page is the most common source of copying mistakes. Give the calculation space — paper is cheap, a lost mark on a test is not.

Today’s practice is half about order and half about counting. Both count.

  1. Set up a maths nest: a notebook or papers, two sharpened pencils, one fixed place. Show it to someone at home.

  2. Count in columns: 46 + 27. Write big digits, ones under ones, the carry above the column.

  3. Count in columns: 63 − 38. Watch borrowing a ten — and leave it visible how you borrowed.

  4. Hand your writing to someone else and ask: can you read my method from this? If not, find which line is sticky.
