When you read a slide, the class reads with you and stops needing you.

When you read a slide out loud, the class reads with you. Eyes run along the lines faster than you talk. Then they stop needing you. On the slide there should be a short sentence the class can take with their eyes. Your mouth says something that is not on the slide: a scene, an example, the word because. Reading a paragraph from the projector is not a presentation. A teacher sees it from the back. You stand at the screen and the class sees a backpack, not a face. Today one ban holds: do not read what is on the slide. Into the メモs field you write two sentences that are not on the slide. Then you click Present (F5). You look at the class. At a number you look for a second and back. A parent or the school holds the account. メールアドレス does not belong on a slide. When the projector dies, your mouth can still say in one sentence what it is about. That is speech. Reading is a notebook on the screen.

Adam turned to the projector and read the title and all the bullets. The class was at the end of the text before him. Ema let the class read the sentence with their eyes. Then she said a scene that was not on the slide: rain, a chain, twelve kilometres. Heads lifted from the text to her. After the lesson Adam deleted the bullets he wanted to read. He left one sentence at the top and two sentences in メモs. He found he has something to say when there is no notebook on the slide. Ema then showed Adam the メモs field at the bottom. He wrote rain and a chain there. On the slide he left only twelve kilometres. A parent from the door said they now see a face and hear a scene, not a notebook.

Before you click Present (F5), ban yourself from reading out loud what is on the slide. The class can take that with their eyes. You add a scene from notes.

Two channels: eyes and ears should not fight

The class’s eyes take a short sentence on the slide. Ears take a scene, an example and a link between slides. When both carry the same thing, it is reading. Reading is not speech. Speech adds what would not fit on a billboard: tone, a pause, because, a small story. In Slides open the メモs field at the bottom. Write two sentences that are not on the slide. Click Present (F5). Look at the class, not at the screen, except a short pause on a number. In PowerPoint the same: Present (F5), notes on your monitor in presenter view, not on the projector. The space bar next slide when you finish saying, not when you finish reading. A mistake is shrinking type so more fits to read. Right is deleting a paragraph from the slide and leaving it in notes. A parent or the school holds the account. メールアドレス does not belong on a slide. When you are not sure, delete from the slide the sentence you want to read, and say it from notes. That is a test whether you have speech, or reading aloud.

Wrong: a slide full of bullets, Adam reads, the class reads, silence between words because he waits for the next line. The teacher watches the wall, not the pupil. A mark for reading is not a mark for a presentation.

Right: Ema, on the slide “12 km · odometer”, her mouth says rain and a chain. A pause on the number. Eyes on twelve, ears on rain. Nobody reads a paragraph, because there is no paragraph on the slide.

Try one slide: on purpose read the title, then say the same thing without reading. The second version is speech. A parent from the door will hear the difference. When a parent from the door hears only the title, you are reading. When they hear rain and on the slide they see a number, you are speaking. That test is enough for one slide. You do not have to say the whole file today.

Edit mode with notes must not go on the projector. 始める前に, click Present (F5). When you see a grid and notes on the screen, you are still in the workshop. Esc and Present again.

Report: do not read the one sentence on the slide. The class sees it. You say why it holds.

You say one sentence, show proof, answer “and what if…”. If you do not know, you say I don’t know.

One slide with no reading

You open the file, write notes and click Present (F5). Your mouth must not read out what is on the slide.

Open a hobby or report file in Google Slides. Click one slide with a sentence at the top. At the bottom open the メモs field (View → Show speaker notes, when the bar is missing). Write two scene sentences that are not on the slide. In PowerPoint: View → メモs. When a paragraph sits on the slide, delete it from the slide and leave it in notes.
At the top click Present (F5). Check that notes are not on the screen. Stand face to the door. Say the scene from memory. Leave the title for the class’s eyes. When you do not know, look at notes on your monitor. Do not turn your back to people toward the projector.
Esc. That same slide, on purpose read the whole thing out loud. Hear the difference. Then Present (F5) again and say it right: an add-on, not a copy of the slide.
In PowerPoint turn on presenter view if you have two displays. Check that the projector does not get notes. On a school PC often one display: then notes must not be on the slide. They are only in edit. Present (F5) = a clean screen. Esc back.
File → check the name at the top. Google Drive saves by itself. The account is a parent’s or the school’s. メールアドレス does not belong on a slide or in the file name. 閉じる Present. One sentence into the notebook: I do not read the slide.

Face to the door, not a back to the projector

You know reading by where you look. Look at the door. At the slide only for a number and back.

Delete from the slide the sentence you want to read. Leave it in notes and say it out loud.
Ask a parent to listen to you for ten seconds from the door. Are you reading, or saying? Do not put a recording on the network.
Ask a parent if they saw your face, or only a back at the projector.
