The body is part of speech. A back to the class is reading, even when you do not read.
Even a good sentence dies when the class sees only your backpack. You stand both feet on the ground, face to the door, not facing the projector. Hands may hang, or for a second show a number on the slide. The whole time in pockets by the zip you look like you are hiding. Eyes: the door, the teacher, the middle of the class. Not one friend. Not the floor. At a number you look a second and back. A remote comes in a bit. Today a space bar is enough, so you do not have to go to the mouse with your back to people. The body learns by drill at a wall, not by talent. Do not train with a joke about a classmate’s body. You train your eyes and your hands. A parent holds the account. On a slide there does not belong a class photo without permission or your email. A parent holds the account. An email does not belong on a slide. Today you train one slide three times, not a whole report. The body remembers repetition. Do not wait for talent.
Tereza stood at the wall, hands in pockets, whispered into the screen. The class packed backpacks. Jonáš stood at an angle to the door. At the number 12 he looked a second, pointed with a finger, hands back. The face stayed with people. After practice Tereza tried the same sentence three times: first a back, then a side, then a face to the door. A parent from the door said: now I see you. That was enough. A parent stood at the door and answered only: a face, or a back. Tereza’s third try she made at an angle to the door. Jonáš told her to look at the number a second, not the whole sentence. Hands showed twelve and then let go. The laptop stayed to the side, not behind her back.
A second of eyes on a number, then back to the door. Reading the whole slide with your eyes from the screen is reading again, only silent.
Where the face points, attention goes
Click Present (F5). Stand at an angle to the class, not facing the wall. Ban yourself from turning to the projector for a whole slide. Hands out of pockets. Show an anchor on the slide, let go. Put the keyboard where you stand, thumb on the space bar. In PowerPoint the same. A mouse on a desk by the wall turns you with your back. A back for a whole slide is a fail of the body, even when your mouth says the right sentence. Eyes do not stay on one friend — that looks like whispering. You switch the door, the teacher, the middle. The floor is not an audience. Drill: the same slide three times. A parent from the door answers in one sentence: did I see a face, or a back? The body remembers. It is not theatre. It is care, so the class has someone to listen to. A parent’s account. Do not put a recording of the body on the network. The drill is the same slide, not a new topic. When school has a desk by the wall, stand to the side, so you reach the space bar with a thumb and the face stays with people.
Wrong: Tereza facing the screen, hands in pockets, a sentence into the wall. A good sentence, a wasted body.
Right: Jonáš to the door, a pause on twelve, hands showed and back. The class sees a face and hears the meaning of the number.
A parent from the door is your practice back row. When they cannot see a face from there, a teacher cannot see it either. Equally wrong is looking the whole time at one friend. It looks like whispering. Switch the door, the teacher, the middle. The floor is not an audience. A parent from the threshold sees it at once.
Do not train at the board with a joke about a classmate’s body. You train your stance, your hands, your eyes. Respect holds in practice too.
Four things you will build in this course
The course has four small projects. You do not have to do them all at once. Today you add only this:
🎯 A hobby in 5 slides
Five slides about something you like doing. One sentence about what it is. No paragraphs from your notebook.
Hobby: at a scene you may point at the slide for a second. Then the face back.
📚 A report
Eight slides for school: a start, three proofs, an end. The title on every slide is a sentence, not “Slide 3”.
Report: at every proof a second on a number or a name, not a back for a whole paragraph.
📊 Survey results
A chart from a table (not a screenshot from chat) and under it where the numbers come from.
Survey: a finger on a chart column, let go, say the meaning. Do not stand at the screen for a minute.
⚖️ A defence
You say one sentence, show proof, answer “and what if…”. If you do not know, you say I don’t know.
Defence: a teacher wants your eyes, not the back of your head at an HDMI cable.
Three repeats of one slide
The same sentence. Three times the body. A parent from the door says when they see you.
-
Open Slides. Pick one slide with a number or a short sentence. Click Present (F5). Stand at an angle to the door, not facing the screen.
-
Say the slide. A second of eyes on a number, back to the door. Hands out of pockets. Show, let go. Thumb on the space bar, so you do not go to the mouse.
-
Esc. Present (F5) again. This time on purpose a back to the door. Hear and see what is wrong. Then a third try right.
-
In PowerPoint: Present (F5), pull the keyboard to the place where you stand. Do not leave a laptop behind you on the desk as a magnet for your back.
-
A parent from the door: did they see a face? Yes — hold. No — turn and repeat. A parent’s account. Do not put a photo of practice on the network.
A parent is the back row
One question is enough: did you see my face the whole time, or a back?
-
Ban pockets for one slide. Hands out, even if they shake.
-
Look at a number a second, not the whole sentence.
-
Ask a parent to stand at the door, not a metre from you.
Now you 💪
- I stand at an angle to the class, not facing the projector.
- Hands are not in pockets the whole time.
- Eyes come back to the door after a second on the slide.
Done when: You can say one slide facing the door, with hands out and eyes with people.
What to take from this lesson
- Face to the class. The screen only for a second.
- Hands may show a number. Then let go.
- The space bar saves your back. A mouse by the wall is a trap.
- Eyes: the door, the teacher, the middle. Not the floor.
- The body is drill, not talent.
- 名前s in the examples (Tereza, Jonáš) are made up. Do not put your number, email or photo on a slide.
