A loan from a friend

A loan shrinks the balance of friendship when it has no deadline. Often no is better.

A loan is spending with a promise. A promise can hurt.

A loan from a friend looks like help. Sometimes it is. Often it is spending that pretends it is not. You give: your balance falls now. They promise to return it. If they do not, friendship fell and the pocket too. If you take: you owe. A debt is a minus, even if the pocket clinks right now.

The course does not advise “never”. It advises: a deadline, an amount, a witness (a parent), and the right to say no. No is honest. No is a friendship that wants to stay.

Adam: “Lend me a twenty until tomorrow, I’ll buy a snack.” Ema lends. Tomorrow nothing. In a week awkwardness at the machine. Ema is angry. Adam says “it was nothing”. The twenty was. The promise too.

The other way: Ema wants a skin, she does not have 79. She borrows from Adam. A parent does not know. Now Ema has a debt and a skin. The notebook should have spending 79, even if the coins came from Adam’s pocket — she owes. If she does not write it, a lie.

💡

A sentence: “I don’t lend money. I can go with you to a teacher / a parent.” When you ask: a parent first, not a classmate. A classmate is not a bank.

A deadline, or a trap

A good loan (if already) has: an amount, a return date, both parents’ agreement, a record. With no date it is a gift in disguise, from which there will be a complaint.

A loan is not a punishment for being poor. Someone has no pocket money and eats a snack from home. That is fine. A loan for a mood is a want with interest of shame. Interest in koruna with children often is not there — the interest is awkwardness.

A loan from chat from a “friend you cannot see” is a Sceptic chapter. Here it is a classmate from the desk. Even there it can hurt. Even there you may say no.

When you owe, return first. Before juice. Before a skin. The must pile. When they owe you and do not return, say it once, then a parent. A hunt for a debt in class is bullying with a calculator.

Ema wants to shorten it to “it will be fine somehow”. Adam asks what the lesson A loan from a friend is for, when a table can do a sum. A sum does not count respect, a PIN, a trap or an envelope. The core is: A loan has a deadline and parents. Often the strongest word is no.

Adults pay the rent. The card, the account and the PIN belong to a parent. A child’s email does not belong here. Pocket-money numbers do not belong on the network. If you break these rules in the lesson “A loan from a friend”, you know a word, not the course.

Ema writes: spending 20 “loan Adam, return Friday”. Friday: income 20 “Adam returned”. Clean. Adam does not return. After a week Ema crosses it out and writes spending “gift / loss, sorted with mum”. Friendship is sorted with words, not a poster on the board.

Adam asks for 200 for a game. Ema: no. 200 is too much for a desk. A parent. The number 200 belongs with a goal, not with a quiet loan.

Practice numbers, not a bank statement. Ema has 80 Kč in the want envelope. Adam pushes a step this lesson can name. When Ema uses the core, either it waits for a parent, or it fits the envelope. If not, anger and a hole are left — proof of pressure, not that the lesson is pointless.

⚠️

Do not force a younger child to lend to you. That is pressure. And do not lend against a password, a PIN, an account. That is not a loan. That is a key.

Why this right now

You are in the course Money with Martin, level Cashier. You can write numbers in a notebook or a table, but the topic is money and decisions, not Excel formulas. The account, the card and the PIN belong to a parent. A child’s email does not belong here. Do not put pocket-money numbers on the network.

This is not the Sheets with Martin course. A table may help, but the mark of success is a decision, not SUM.

You will know this lesson by one sentence: A loan has a deadline and parents. Often the strongest word is no. When you can say it to a parent or a teacher, you have the core. The rest is practice, not magic.

A balance with no loans is readable. With quiet debts the notebook is theatre. A goal of 200 Kč from loans is not a goal. It is someone else’s pocket money with delayed shame.

Four things you will build from the course

The course has four small projects. You do not have to do them all at once. Today you add only what this lesson can do.

🪙 Pocket money

A 14-day record: income, spending, balance. What you do not write down is as if you did not spend it — and that is a lie.

In the 14 days: a loan as spending. A return as income. Do not take it with no deadline.

🚌 Class trip

A budget, a reserve, a plan B. A shared till has rules.

A trip till: no personal loans into the till. Till rules, not twenties under the table.

🎮 Game shop

V-bucks and a loot box are a purchase. A subscription keeps going.

A game on debt from a friend: no. A parent approves a game purchase.

🧾 Stall / mini-company

Cost, price, profit. Three numbers for the class.

A stall: “take a lemonade, you’ll pay later” has a limit and a list. Otherwise a loss.

Workshop: two sentences — no and a deadline

You will practise no. And you will practise how a record would look if you did lend with a parent.

  1. Write your no sentence. It should be calm, not mocking.

  2. A practice row: an amount, a name (first name), a return date. No surname on a poster.

  3. Tell a parent a classmate is not a bank. Ask that loans do not go through you in secret.

  4. Ban: a loan in exchange for a password, a photo, silence.

You count when no can leave your mouth. A deadline on paper is a second brake. With no parent even a deadline is weak.

Practice: help, or a debt?

Decide. Practice amounts.

  1. “A twenty until tomorrow.” What is missing for a decent loan? What is often better?

  2. Why does 79 for a skin from a friend with no parent spoil the notebook and the game?

  3. When they do not return, why not poster the debt on the board?

  4. Why is a password for a loan not a loan?

Now you 💪

Go through three checks. By each one, tick in your head: do I see it, or not?

  1. I take a loan as spending with a promise.
  2. I can say no without mockery.
  3. A secret loan with no parent does not belong here.

If something is missing, go back to the steps above. It is not a test for marks. It is a safety net, so you go on with certainty, not with a mess.

Check: You have a no sentence and you know a return belongs in the notebook as income.
