Why maths is not a monster

Maths is a muscle, not a talent. You train it in small bits, and it counts things you care about.

Maths is not a monster. It is a muscle.

Nobody was born with maths in their head. Not teachers. Not Martin. Everyone who counts fast today once counted on their fingers and got it wrong.

Maths is like riding a bike. The first time you fall. The tenth time you ride. The difference is not talent — it is how many tries you had. Your brain grows with training, just like a muscle.

And one more thing: you already know maths. When you split a pizza fairly, you count. When you watch how much pocket money you have left, you count. When you know there are ten minutes left in the lesson, you count.

This course just puts it in order. Short lessons, work on paper, a worksheet of questions. No hour-long tests. And mistakes? They are not shame here. A mistake is a clue we follow — that is the whole of lesson two.

Ema stands in front of a test and says: “I have no maths brain.” Adam laughs: “Yesterday you split 24 sweets between six people and nobody cried. Each got four. That was division, Ema.”

Ema stops. She really did count it. No test, no stress, just like that — because she cared about the sweets. “So why is it hard at school?” she asks. Adam shrugs: “Because at school you count scared. The sweets you counted in peace.” That is where Chuẩn bị starts: in peace.

💡

The sentence “I have no maths brain” is a trap. Everyone has the same brain cells — what differs is how many questions you have already counted. Say this instead: “I cannot do this yet.” That little word yet makes the whole difference.

How we learn here

Every lesson in this course runs the same way. Once you know the rhythm, nothing surprises you.

First you read what it is about. Short, no waffle. Then comes a worked example — not just the answer, but the whole method step by step. The method is the most valuable part. You remember the answer until tomorrow. The method stays for years.

Then you do it. Always on paper. Your head is good at thinking, but bad at holding middle results — that is why a pencil. Lessons also have a worksheet: all the questions at once, like a notebook, and it tells you right away if you are right.

And at the end, a check. Three questions you use to check yourself that you have the lesson. It is not a test for marks. It is a safety net.

Ten to fifteen minutes per lesson. Short and often beats long and once — why, we will say in lesson five.

Example 1: sweets with no fight

Ema has 24 sweets and six friends. How many does each get?

The sharing method: give everyone one sweet. That is 6 given out, 24 − 6 = 18 left. Give everyone a second: 18 − 6 = 12. Third: 12 − 6 = 6. Fourth: 6 − 6 = 0.

She shared four times in sixes and reached zero. Each has 4 sweets. That is called division: 24 : 6 = 4. Ema could do it before she knew the word.

Example 2: saving for a game

Adam wants a game for 299 Kč. Each week he saves 50 Kč. In how many weeks does he have it?

Count week by week: week 1 is 50, week 2 is 50 + 50 = 100, week 3 is 100 + 50 = 150, week 4 is 150 + 50 = 200, week 5 is 200 + 50 = 250, week 6 is 250 + 50 = 300.

After six weeks he has 300 Kč and the game costs 299 Kč. Answer: in 6 weeks, and he still has 1 Kč left. This is maths that pays off, literally.

⚠️

Do not compare yourself with a classmate who counts faster. Speed comes on its own with training. Who counts slowly and right today, counts fast and right in a month. Who rushes only trains mistakes.

Practice: now you do it 🎲

Now try it for real. You will see all the questions at once, like on paper. Bắt đầu with ten. When it goes well, add more.

A taster to start: easy addition to 10. Three right in a row and you have the first streak of the course.

Practise the questions

On paper: maths you already do

Take paper and a pencil. Today you are not counting anything new — you just notice what you already count.

  1. Write three situations from the last few days when you counted, and it was not school. Hint: money, time, food, a game, a score.

  2. By each situation write what kind of counting it was: addition, subtraction, sharing into parts, or comparing (what is more).

  3. Pick one situation and write it as a question with numbers. For example: snack 25 Kč + drink 15 Kč = 40 Kč.

  4. At the bottom of the paper write the sentence: “I cannot do this yet” — and leave space after it. During the course you will cross out the word yet.

Now you 💪

  1. I can say in my own words why maths is not talent, but training.
  2. I have found at least three situations where I already use maths.
  3. I know how a lesson in this course looks: method, paper, check.

Done when: On paper you have three situations with numbers, and in your head the sentence with yet.
